From my own personal experience, it seems to me that the Upstate NY prison inhabitants would make a lot better neighbor than most of those folks from "The City". My co-worker was doing a job in Long Island and had to go back to the hotel for 10 minutes. He usually doesn't leave anything in the car, but was in a rush. Within that 10 minutes, some resident from your fine Metropolitan area took the liberty to bust out the windshield to his rental car, took his laptop, tools, medication, GPS, etc. and had to fly back home to his pharmacist to get his prescription drugs so he could come back to finish his work there. This place is worse than Mexico! What an American made Gutter.
I just got back from a business trip in Ithica. I drove from Rochester to that area, took care of business and drove back and it was a most enjoyable drive. I didn't even get my window broken into or get a $65.00 or a $125.00 parking ticket for being 5 seconds late to put my 6 quarters into the parking meter every 55 minutes while trying to work. Then you've got the Binghamton area. It's nice to see Americans still doing something positive in this country.
When we did business in Manhattan, we had to stay in New Jersey to get an affordable hotel, pay 15 bucks a night to park and try to drive to our job site in the city and park. Two parking tickets and 185 bucks later, I think I lost money on the trip.
In Ithica, I had the freedom to drive to where I needed to go-like a true American, had a place to park and got better pizza!
Hail to the Finger Lakes Area!

Just because I am an agent doesn't mean I would defend an area that is contaminated or a dump. I also chose to live here and could do business anywhere. I stand by the fact, and it is a fact that there is affordable housing, good schools and very safe areas here compared to other parts of the country. Come visit us and you will see that.

East Side is the ghetto - thats different than toxic waste in the ground like Love Canal or parts of South Buffalo. Actually there are a few sites, but Im pretty sure the East side has been mostly residential for the entire history of the city.
For that matter there been concern about the Nike base in Hamburg several times. Or that radioactive leak that was out in West Valley or where-ever (I just remember they dug a trench and filled it with cat-litter to stop the leaching of the radioactive water.. or something like that)
The issue is things like our previous governor NOT signing the bill that would prevent any future toxic waste dumps from being opened in the great lakes basin areas in Upstate New York.

Southern Erie County is a CAFO dumping ground. The town of Eden, NY smells like an open sewer from all the dairy factory farms. There is one located right in the center of the town that is a total disgrace. It looks like crap and smells even worse. Owned by a former town supervisor. Manure spills all over the streets, polluted creeks, poor air quality, contaminated run off and polluted well water. No enfrcement action from the DEC. This town is also over run with illegal farm laborers. They are everywhere and are being employed by the farmers. Anyone one thinking about moving to this town should reconsider. It smells rotten, the politics are rotten and corrupt, crime is worse than you'd imagine and the illegal population is soaring. Taxes are going up up and away to pay for all these illegals. Real rotten place to live.

Apparently, elected officials look the other way, as the agri-lobbies are very powerful and influential. It is becoming a wide-spread problem (no pun intended), especially for the Finger Lakes region, where tourism is important to the local economies, and their lakes are their pride and joy. If those become polluted, what do they have left?
Too Late. The Finger Lakes are already contaminated by the massive Dairy CAFO's and the Wine Tourism Industry is not very happy with them either. The stench from the slurry spreading is making repeat business difficult. You havn't lived until you see and smell hundreds of thousands of gallons of putrid manure slurry spread on a field. The slurry has been stored in a hole in the ground for many months. The odor doesn't even remotley resemble manure. It's a chemical smell that stays on your cloths. Can you imagine if human waste were disposed of in this manner? Then remember that the average dairy cow produces over 100lbs of manure and urine per cow, per day! Multiply this by the thousands of Confined Dairy Cows and you'll get the picture. More waste is produced by these animals than the combined population of the city of Rochester.....and it's all DUMPED on the ground. Willet Dairy in the Finger Lakes is a fine example. Thousands of cows all confined. Tanker trucks running non-stop for days saturating the ground.

I'm not a buffalo real estate agent, but I do think the western new york area is wonderful. I chose a job out of the area, and wish I hadn't, I'll be back soon. Western New York has alot of great qualities, they just aren't always in the forefront of peoples minds.
