Thank you chkthankgod. You really do know NY state. I can't remember if you're a native or have just traveled around a lot. I do like the idea of being close to a SUNY college like Potsdam or Plattsburgh. It would probably mean some access to decent library facilities which is important to me. Potsdam is added to the list. Wow, I feel like I have to take off a couple of weeks just to drive around these places.

Actually, between Potsdam and nearby Canton, there are 2 SUNY campuses and 2 private colleges. There's one of each campus in both communities. They are about 15 minutes apart and Potsdam has a hospital.

Saranac Lake and Glens Falls have community colleges too.

I was just in Potsdam last week! Cute little village/town, nothing too big or crazy. Even with the colleges, it seems like the kind of place where people will remember your name. We always go to eat at Maxfield's right in the Village.

there is some decent hiking in that area. (Snowy Mtn 3903', 2600' vertical from Rt 30 trailhead, Wakely Mountain,Blue Mtn.) . It's not the high peaks but there are some beautiful lakes in the area.

Default Info about Saranac Lake Needed

Originally from New England and now in Florida. I have had it with the heat, hurricanes, humidity and no seasons. Husband is retired and I'm still working, but could retire early. We are interested in Saranac Lake and would like some info about the area. We have a very well behaved basset hound (he actually thinks he's our son and not a dog!). Huck is noted in our area as the neighborhood greeter. He needs to have everyone pat him and sometimes, rub his stomach. Do you know of any houses for rent?

Saranac Lake is in one of the most beautiful parts of the state but it is also the coldest part of the state during the winter. I lived in the Albany area for over fifty years and the local weather reports said that Saranac Lake had the coldest recorded temperature more often than any other spot in the state during the winter months (which for the High Peaks Region were November thru at least March).

Exupstateny:

Thanks for your response regarding the area and temperatures. I'm aware of the cold winters in NY, by husband, before he retired used to travel to the finger lakes in winter and I would go. I loved it. We lived in MT for a while and It was not only beautiful, but cold. Didn't stop us from hiking, etc. I would much rather have to dress in layers and be able to take off clothing if I get hot....Can't do that down here, we start off with hardly anything now..I would get arrested if I started to shed clothing and receive a LOT of calls asking for me to cover up

We had to put down our basset last november, he was our good buddy through and through. Big basset fans as we have had three so far. Enjoy yours and give him a big squeeze.

I'm not in Saranac but close enough to it to say that you really have to understand the winters in these here parts. They are no joke and your I have had it with heat can be easily replaced with I have had it with snow and cold, believe me when I say this winter has been long and cold and unfortunately they are usually that way. Some people can handle it no problems but it can wear you right down, in particular if you are a sun lover-it has been nowhere to be found for the last week and we won't see it till Tuesday.

Anyway I'm not trying to discourage you but please be aware. Good luck!!

.......I don't post much on this forum anymore...just bz. First thing I noticed on this thread was that the originator was still posting quite a while after it's start. Often , these threads go on w/posts long after the originator has departed this site. I understand the need for info regarding a life/move, and will say once again, visit an area at the time of year you might like it the LEAST. If you're still okay after that, you won't be regretting you relocation.
Just a few other thoughts..don't believe everything that get's posted here. As an example, I'm in the southern tier...roughly considered Broome, Chenango, Tioga, and Chemung counties. I've seen posters here compare living in this region to a trip into hell....and I gave up a while back, trying to give an alternate view. Look at some of my old posts to see what I mean.
As for advice...I would consider ckthankgod a good source of honest info. I've already danced around the edges of getting booted off the forum w/the direction some of my posts were going on the military life section....
