Default Gay Friendly NY State=Ithaca, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, Upstate
If you are Lesbian and want a nice small quieter city with gay residents, then Ithaca is the place for you=live in the city or just outside in the beautiful countryside=Cornell University is there. If you want a large city, I'd suggest Rochester which has an active gay community=groups & events & activities and a big summertime gay picnic.

If you are a Gay Man then I suggest Rochester or Buffalo. Those cities are around 1,000,000 + or - so have more gay residents than smaller Binghamton or Utica. Although Albany and Syracuse are large cities and do have gay residents, the gay communities there are smaller but that could be to your liking; you choose. You'll be fine being gay, living here in New York State. Welcome to NYS.

If you're willing to expand your list to include NJ, I'd check out Plainfield. It's been cited as being a "gay suburbia".
