Welcome to NY! I don't know specifics on Ft Drum housing or school. But regarding your daughter not having much to do, I can tell you that most people who embrace outdoor sports in the winter have a much easier time adjusting to living in a cold, snowy environment. Kids who live up that way spend the winter playing hockey, skiing, etc. If your family can get into activities of the outdoor sort, she will never be bored and adjusting to the winters will be much easier. Good luck with your move!

If you enter in Fort Drum in the search space, there will be a bunch of information that will pop up. I was stationed there from 2000-2003 and I'm familiar with the area. As for schools, Indian River and Carthage, the districts that kids on and around post go to are fine. There aren't any horrible school districts in the area to be honest. There are private schools, the Immaculate Heart Central Schools being pretty popular. This should help too: 2011 Watertown Area school district rankings - Buffalo - Business First

..I'll agree w/ckhthankgod..there are no real "bad" areas around Ft Drum. My experience there runs from the early 80's - 2001'. The post saw a lot of renovations and upgrades in that time. The main issue w/info seekers to this site has been the availiability of off-base housing within a reasonable drive to the post. But..since you'll be on post..that shouldn't be a problem. One tip..don't hibernate on post. within a 2 hour drive, you can be in Canada, on the shores(or waters) of the Great Lakes(lake Ontario), in the Adirondacks, etc...

Good advice and the area is good for families. It does snow up there, but it is usually taken care of in a timely manner.

There should be quite a bit of new housing due to the expansion of Fort Drum. It has changed in terms of the units up there. For instance, I was in the 10th Signal Battalion, C. Company, but now there isn't a 10th Signal battalion anymore and they blended Signal soldiers with other units. This is what I heard from guys that were in the same company as me that were there during these current wars. So, it should be fine. I believ that I posted websites for housing on other Fort drum threads. If you look at the bottom of this page, you will see the other threads that were started looking for information on Fort Drum.
