Default Country Life----Where to go?

My husband & I are looking for a place to move out in the country---somewhere VERY AFFORDABLE, with nice people and place for us to have a few animals (we have dogs and parrots presently). Somewhere I can let my dog bark without worrying about the nasty neighbor I have next door to me in PA!

Husband was driving through from NJ through NY and said he ran into some very rural areas that were beautiful.

Any ideas as to where you can live cheaply but nicely. (if that made any sense!!)

I would suggest Western New York, near lake erie. Very cheap, very beautiful, lots of recreation and lots of space. If you want some more info on the area, let me know!

The area west and north of the Castkills seems to be pretty cheap, at least compared to the Catskills themselves. If remoteness and lots of space are key, I guess the Adirondacks would be the best place in NY state.

Although there will be comments from others that do not agree....I'd try Mountain Lodge Park in Blooming Grove. The community isn't forgiving of past nonsense that has left a reputation, but if you are looking for affordable; MLP is (worth checking). I am a resident and the community is up and coming. If you are patient and have vision, this is the place. People from the city are moving into MLP, which use to be seasonal bungalos, now turned year round. Some roads are paved and others are an eye sore. Nontheless you make the best of what is given. The taxes are pretty decent and you have all the perks of being in a country setting without killing yourself over the mtg payment. Some of the homes have been renovated while others belong as a prop in a horror flick. There is a lot of ground to cover, so I'd drive around and see for yourself. Nothing to lose, but a lot to gain if you see something you like. There are a lot of homes for sale, which is good. The opportunity in getting good blood in is promising.

That smell like spam - no agenda but poke around Greene and Delaware County, NY. Look at local town and county government web sites that give you a feel for the area either NY,NJ. Google all the RE sites in any region you may be thinking about.

Visit the areas and look at services all the things you may need to live more rural. Very general but you will get a lot of help here when you hone in on something...

I think we will make a "Sunday Drive" and go for a visit sometime. We are not thinking of moving within the next 5 yrs, but you never know!!

I'd like to have scoped out the area so that if the situation changes we can make our move.

Thanks everyone!

Mary

Western NY is loaded with Dairy Factory Farms called CAFO's (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations). They are all expanding due to record high milk prices. Do an internet search under "CAFO NEW YORK POLLUTION" to get an idea of what they are like. You don't want to live within 5 miles of one of these. They stink to the point that using your yrad for recreational use is impossible and well water is frequently contaminated with coliform and E coli. Make sure you get something in writing from your real estate agent about odors and well water pollution before you sign anything. The realtors like to hide behind the Agricultural District clause in the mountains of documents you sign at closing. Some, not all but some realtors will tell you anything to get you to buy a home near a factory farm. Buyer BEWARE.

They aren't THAT bad and there really isn't that many of them in real western new york, Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. I'd say the cities smell much worse

Southern Erie county has 17 Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO's) or Factory Farms. Many more are being built and long dormant dairy farms are coming back online due to record high milk prices and increased government welfare payments. Almost ALL exisiting factory farms in erie county are expanding. You don't want to live anywhere near one of these Hell places because they store millions of gallons of cow waste for months at a time, then they turn it into a liquid slurry and tanker truck it out to the fields near your home to spread. You can smell it for miles many times a year. They saturate the ground with this putrid filth that smells nothing like manure. It's a chemical stench that stays on your clothing and you can taste it in your mouth. The farm itself can be smelled for miles even without the spreading. Take a drive out to Eden, North Collins, Brant, Collins or Lawtons New York and see what they look like and smell like for yourself. You'll notice one common thing about homes near a factory farm..........lots of FOR SALE signs all over the place. You've been warned.

For some info on living near a factory farm, go to FactoryFarm.org or do and internet search under the topic CAFO HELL.
