When I was in NY a week and a half ago, it was VERY green and lush. I was in Rochester, the Finger Lakes, Corning, Cooperstown, and Albany. So a good chunk of the state. We kept commenting on how green everything was.
Have you ever heard of black raspberry ice cream? It's pretty popular and made by many companies including Kroger who owns Turkey Hill. I mention Kroger because that's the store I asked about buying black raspberries from. Funny that they don't exist yet somehow magically the same company uses them in ice cream.
Blackberries are completely different than black raspberries. Black raspberries taste different than red raspberries also. Many berry bushes in the wild are full of black raspberries. Both black and red come with throne and without thorns depending on the variety. My parents have both.

Thats kinda surprising that Kroger, with 338,000 employees would have one that doesn't know about a berry that doesn't grow near there home and 90% are grown in Oregon, the flavor of which is used by there employer's distant Yankeeland subsidiary to make ice cream. You'd think that with a third of a million employees making 7 bucks an hour Kroger would require at least a two year degree.
Its weird cause I grew up in citrus country in Florida and everybody in NY knows everything about oranges so I'm always super impressed. Before the cold this year wiped out NY's apple crop everyone here knew all about smudge pots a such.

Nice rant, but try again. The employee I spoke with was the produce manager. So yes he should know about all kinds of produce. They sell starfruit and other exotic fruits so black raspberries aren't something odd. Nor are they rare nor exotic nor from a foreign country.
Oh and FYI Kroger is THE largest grocery store chain in the country and has stores all over the country. Saying 90% of black raspberries are grown in Oregon is like saying 90% of cranberries are grown in Massachusetts (they're not anymore unfortunately). People eat them and many stores sell them year round. They are, in fact, a Yankee land fruit as you so eloquently put it.
Why wouldn't people in NY know about citrus crops? Just because something doesn't grow in one's home state means they're ignorant or don't care. That's not how NYer's are.
