This is Western NY, not Upstate NY.

western NY is part of upstate ny. You can use the two interchangably from Rochester westward.

It's all "up' from Downstate NY/LI. I usually say I'm from Western NY too...but you can say both...especially in Rochester (where I live)

This thread is amusing. I figured I'd jump into the mix here. I was born and raised in Olean, NY...that is definitely Western, NY! Olean has so much history that I never really knew about while living there...its pretty fascinating. I have a love/hate relationship with the area...walking uphill both ways in feet of snow lol..its true!

I do love the Finger Lakes region as well...I spent many summers there going to summer camp and then working at the camp. It is so beautiful up there!

You should do you research... EVERYTHING outside of Downstate is UPstate... it may not be directly above in a straight line but it sure as heck is UP... BUT you explain the tenstion between the REST of NY and "YOUR Up" and Downstate...People Seem to forget we actually BELONG to the state and are left to rot for a good portion of the time and money. I don't know if there are other States with this same problem... but NYS is NOT a united front as one might gather from reading this thread. It is cut up into three major Parts... Down (NYC), "UP" Or we might as well just call it ALBANY, and the REST of NYS... it is rediculous.
