Default age to drive in NY?

the state's site was a little convoluted -- from what i could gather, you can get a learner's permit when you turn 16 and your license after a driver ed class, even if you're still 16?

You can get your permit when you are 16, and have to have the permit for 6 months before you can get your license. They have the limited provisional license (limits the number of persons under 21 in the car, can't drive between certain late hours) until they turn 18.

If I remember right you can't drive after 9pm while you have the provisional... Though I do remember you can get away with it if you can show that you get out of work at like 10pm or something and have a good reason to be driving.

Also: it depends on if you are talking about NY as in the upstate cities and areas which would be like has been described in this thread. Down closer to NYC, within city limits I think everything gets way more strict. I heard years ago you arn't even allowed to learn to drive in the city limits - you have to do it outside the city. Something like they don't potential accidents and problems caused by unexperienced drivers on already congested city streets

Yes and no. You've got to be 16 to obtain a Learner's Permit in New York State. If you take and pass your road test and are issues a Driver License, OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK CITY you may operate a motor vehicle for the purposes of going to and from work, but not after 9PM. WITHIN NEW YORK CITY LIMITS, you may NOT operate a motor vehicle without a Driver License-carrying adult in the car and no one under a certain age can be in the vehicle with you.

In all of New York State with a Driver's Education course, you may obtain a full and unrestricted Driver License at the age of 17 (including within New York City). Without a Driver's Education course the full license is issued at 18.

Hope that clears it up.

A 17 year old can not drive out of state. You don't get your full license until you are 18. The driver's license as of Monday for teens has new laws. From our paper today-

Teenage drivers with a learner's permit, which can be obtained at age 16, will have to wait six months before they can schedule a road test for a license. The law also increases from 20 hours to 50 hours — including 15 hours at night — the amount of driving that a parent or guardian needs to verify before a teenage driver can get a license.

Lastly, drivers with a junior license or permit will be limited to one non-family passenger under the age of 21 in the vehicle unless they are accompanied by an adult.

But from what the DMV site says-your junior license automatically becomes a senior license on your 18th birthday,.

The thruway follows the same guidelines as other upstate roads. Those under 18 with a license may drive on the thruway up to 9 PM, or later if they have work reasons. Those over 18 have no restrictions.
