Default Looking For Commuteable Country Life

Hi Everyone,

My company is relocating me to Manhattan. We have four young boys who are all in elementary school, or approaching elementary school. We are moving from a pretty rural area and would like to raise our boys in an place where they will have a great quality of life--plenty of trees to climb, water to swim in and interesting places to explore. Obviously, a great public school system, and decent housing ($350K to $450K) (preferably older housing stock) is also very important.

Can anyone suggest places that are within commuting distance to NYC? I would like to keep my commute to no more than 90 minutes. Is that even possible?

Thanks for all your help.

Monroe is nice and has a great school district although taxes are a bit high, Warwick is also nice with good schools, chester and goshen are nice too. If possible, it would be good for you to come and drive around to see what you like. These are in Orange County. I really dont know Putnam and Dutchess. Maybe someone else??

In 90 minutes you can go as far north as Walden, Wallkill, Pine Bush, Cornwall, Washingtonville, Warwick. Check those out.

Monroe has some of the best schools in Southern NY.

Chester has lagged a little, but nice area.

Warwick, Montgomery, Walden, Wallkill (REALLY NICE), Newburgh town with Wallkill or Valley Central Schools, Goshen, Middletown with Minisink or Goshen schools, Campbell Hall and Maybrook.

Stay far away from Newburgh, Middletown and Kingston schools. I posted a link here about the school districts. Very useful.

Valley Central my old school. The best ever!!! LOL
Towns in that district would be Walden, Montgomery, Maybrook, some parts of Rock Tavern. Did I miss anything?

I lived in Wallkill for 1 year, it wasn't bad but my parents moved us back to Walden.

Yes it's worth repeating don't sent your kids to Newburgh Free Academy
Unless you don't like them

Hi I live in Kingston, and Love the schools. There are great opportunities for arts, sports enrichment. My kids were in private schools, and I switched them.
Ther are wonderful areas to explore all around. The area is famous for the arts, parks, climbing, horses, it just goes on and on.

This a great walking town. We have public transportation, but it ends early in the evening. We have a special dedicated bus system that is on call for the elderly and disabled.

We have a bunch of parks, three quaint town centers, and walkable pharmacies and supermarkets from several sections of the city. Many people here choose not to drive.

The whole city has great Catskill and occasional Hudson river views because we're on a set of gentle hills.

I commuted to NYC for 15 years and live in Beacon. All of our neighbors commute. The train is the best way to go.
