Binghamton does not have a lot of options for higher paying jobs...Lockheed Martin is doing well as are a few others, but that is about it. Binghamton's unemployment is lower now, even below the national average, I think.

Unshackle Upstate

This is a coalition of businesses trying to change things in Albany for upstate employers to make NY a better place for people to do business. They have had some success so far in changing the financial burden that businesses have here.

It might be lower(not sure on this) but all the jobs are minimum wage type($7-9/hr). Sure they might be filling more jobs for unqualified people which makes the unemployment rate go down but those jobs are worthless for people who want to have nice things. You simply aren't going to get very far in Binghamton unless you are into sales or something other than a standard 9-5.

I don't think you are going very far anywhere these days with things the way they are. I am just surprised that things are not even worse here in Broome County, when we are usually lagging even further behind everyone else.

According to yahoo news....Binghamton is apparently the 3rd strongest housing market in the country right now. Interesting, there are actually a few Upstate NY cities on the list....http://http://promo.realestate.yahoo.com/ten_rising_in_value_realestate_markets.html (broken link)

I've lived many places over the years.

Born in california, lived in Rome ny, grew up in Endwell and spent many years in Buffalo, NY

I currently live on Long Island and I've been here for over a year.

Oh yeah, lived in NOVA for a few months

NYS is one of the best places to live from a scenery and variety standpoint, so many lakes and beautiful areas, second only to cali I think

I definitely appreciate the binghamton area more now than I ever did. It's true that jobs for educated people are few and far between. I used to think that if you weren't a doctor or a lawyer there weren't any decent jobs around.

Both buffalo and Binghamton are imo great places to live with nothing but potential. I don't know if it will ever be reached but it won't be new retail store or a friggin' aquarium that will revitalize the area.

I totally agree. Right now, the defense industry is employing many people here, but I think that Binghamton has to look more into the future if it is to keep up with other cities down the line.
I see the new retail in the area as more of a positive sign, rather than the route to revitalization.

I knew about that housing market thing earlier this year...Binghamton's market was very good for a bit but I wasn't sure if that has kept up or not....I couldn't get to this website for some reason...

I also wonder if the Destiny project will have any impact on Binghamton....we are a bit far from there but it can't hurt.

I think binghmaton is improving, about the downtown your right its becoming much nicer. I think it will turnout being a good place, but everything takes time. If binghamton it self dosn't, its suburbs will. Vestal is like booming its, getting better and better everyday.

we need more bars,
more bars leads to more drunk people
more drunk people leads to more sex
more sex lead to more enjoyment of enviorment....

people work hard and want to get paid alot, so they can impress a girl and have sex

if we had more bars. more people would come to binghamton, and more jobs would be produced

its all about the bars

As for the topography issue, my parents live in Conklin, NY and they told me it was the strangest thing when they were rescued from the June 2006 flood by boat and just down the road from them the houses were completely submerged under water and rescue boats were cruising over them. Anyhow, like I said before it all depends on what you make out of it and I'm going to take my chances on Florida.

Good ole Conklin NY...I have family there. My mom is from there born and raised. I grew up just over the state line in PA. I understand what you mean by exploring things on your own. Yet I understand the advice they were trying to give. A good way to look at it is if you make your own opinion on it, you can only be happy/sad with yourself. I hope you enjoy florida...I am assuming you've scoped out the area your considering. I remember when I was on a flight on US air back in september the monthly magazines that they publish on there own had a huge article on the Greater Binghamton area in it. I was impressed reading it all...but must say they made it sound much better than it is. And NO I am not knocking Binghamton...I miss it at times!! I moved to south carolina 2.5 years ago and love it here. I graduated high school (7 years ago). Economy's great here, house prices and taxes are great and the weather is beautiful (its going to be 75 and 78 this weekend ) and the people here are nicer than alot of other places I have been too. What ever move you make I wish you the best! Personally being from the "Binghamton" area its sad to see how much that area is suffering compared to other parts of the county. Not to mention the amount of young people leaving the area. I know one thing....I miss GOOD italian food!! Glad I can cook it is all I can say!!! :-)

Default About the Florida area, alittle off subject again...

I have been living outside of Jacksonville, Fl for 2 years (in a suburb close to Orange Park as RedSoxFan had mentioned) and have not had to deal with hurricanes and weather issues as someone suggested. The area is positioned in a fortunate location, I guess too far up north. No flooding probs but there has been some in the city in certain areas. This is an area worth checking out!
