I didn't believe it, but I was told for years to stay out of Buffalo and even more, Niagara Falls, NY. I could not understand what on earth happened so that Niagara Falls, ON (which isn't great but has a great facade) looks busy and fun, while Niagara Falls, NY looks like it hasn't seen much action for 50 years. How could a city the same size as Superior, WI have the amount of crime Niagara Falls does? Once I got there (I flew from Duluth, MN to Buffalo en route to Toronto, spent some time in Buffalo and Megabused it to Toronto) I found people to be very nice. I know this sounds stupid but I could tell that (being the only non-black person on the city bus in Buffalo heading to Niagara Falls, NY) people were very talkative, and I didn't walk away thinking I was the only white person there. It was more like being around people who obviously knows what that feels like and with my two gym bags someone must've figured I was staying at the Niagara Falls 'Y' that night and said, 'Hey! You wanna get out here - its just across the alley!'. So, yea, while seeing clear signs of blight and poverty I didn't encounter dangerous or scary people. But again it's perception. If I had an 18-year-old daughter would I feel comfortable with her walking around alone? Of course not.
I've seen some pretty bad places (Detroit - but that's the perception it's bad because where the hell is everyone! Vancouver, BC and the downtown eastside, which has the highest concentration of street junkies and HIV+ addicts who will kill you to get money for heroin) so I'm not new to uncomfortable situations. Just use common sense, don't **** certain people off and don't say anything stupidly offensive and you'll be alright.
So, I've never been to NYC. When, for you who've been there for years, did Times Square or the bus station go from scary/runaways/hookers/homeless to condos and Disney? Was it kind of overnight or was it decades of little things? Do you think those who have been priced out of NYC have relocated, for example, to Buffalo?

There is no MNRR station in Newburgh. There is both a Town and a City of Newburgh; the town is significantly safer than the city...I'd consider the entire city to be dangerous, but if I had to pick out an area that is especially dicey, its Dubois, S Miller, Johnston, and Lander...

True story. Anyone can disagree obviously, but people say Rochester is dangerous all the time. I've literally never had a problem there. My brother who lives on Hollenbeck street, right off of Norton on the other hand has had many problems. But I haven't, I don't think the city is dangerous.
My personal least favorite city in NY is Schenectady with Binghamton as a close second. (although based on experience I feel safer in Schenectady).

What is ironic with that last sentence is that Binghamton is probably one of the safest metros in the country and has maybe 3-5 small areas in the metro that are iffy(Central Endicott, Central Johnson City, the Northside near the public housing, an area of the Southside near some low income apartments in the eastern portion and north of Main into some of the First Ward). Even then, it seems to be largely lifestyle based. EndicottNY will correct me if I'm wrong though.

No, you're pretty much right. The thing about Binghamton is every main street or commercial area is in an area that looks lower income with iffy parts. Main St, Court St, Nyseg Stadium, Robinson St, Clinton St etc. are all in iffy, lower income neighborhoods. So usually, more than not if you're not a local that is all you see.

I didn't say it wasn't safe, just saying I'm not a fan. Sorry Endicott.

No lol I didn't take any offense to it. I'm not thrilled with the direction it's heading, after Bing's second highest violent crime rate ever last year('08 had four more violent crimes than '11) the violent crime total is up 18% through the first 6 months of 2012. I was just saying theres good and bad. Regardless, apology accepted lol.

are you serious about newburgh ive walked around there no problem ive grown up on saratoga off lyell ave. ive seen *****s find out about a pedophile on the block, and they threw him out of the second story window and nobody calls the cop. i saw a body float up next to me on the canal when i was a little kid. i recently saw someone get shot in front of me on main and jefferson. and some kid just got murdered for his shoes yesterday. ive been to newburgh its not all that bad. rochester police was accused of not reporting murders. look up the ny times article. ****s not always what it seems and personelly i love growing up in this hell its my home. and if a pedophile walks down the street he should get shot and put off as a missing person. because if ur scum get killed and burn in hell. long live rochester, 585 ****s.
