fubsyfaerie,
A quick exlanation to the Civil War thing is explained as follows: Much of the war was fought in the South, hence lots of destruction occurred in the South. Northern troops ie Shermans march to the sea, burned homes, and entire cities, and pillaged their way all through the South from Georgia to the Carolinas. It was meant to destroy Southern morale. The Southern economy after the war was devastated. After the war, the North sent its politicians South and installed them and ruled what is called "Reconstruction." Many northerners also moved South and took advantage of its defeat. The North was able to recover much more quickly as it was not nearly as directly affected as the South. The South could not carry on as such. Direct effects from the war were still felt all the way up the second World War. No one is still "fighting the war" down here. The Confederate flag was and is still seen as a memorial for those who fought and died for a cause they believed in, which was independence. It is not seen as racist and not been to be. It is perhaps something many up north dont understand, maybe this explains it a little bit. |

People "keep up with the Jonses" all over the US. I will walk around in Manhatten any day in my Target jeans, 20 dollar shoes and 10 dollar hair doo. That is just me.
I don't care what idiots thing - especially if they judge me by what I can afford to wear and not by my mind and capabilities.Frankly, I enjoy seeing people and their expensive Escalades, 500K homes and the like. I would rather see those things and meet people with culture and a little bit more than 2 rocks rolling around in their head, then live in some dead, dreary, backwards town to save a buck. (Not calling NC those things - there are plenty of areas like this in the US) If you are able to keep up with the $$ in NY, then you will have a higher retirement income, higher equity in your house and then when you retire you will reap the rewards all the more for living to a lower cost of living area. That is why NYers run to florida when they retire LOL! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carolina Native, there are people who use the confederate flag to mean hurtful things, since a flag is a symbol it can be translated into many different meanings. So many people have used it in reference to racism, I doubt that there are many who will be able to see it as anything else for quite awhile... Kind of like the Nazi sign - it is also a Hindu sign (I think it means tree or peace or something) but people still immediately see it as being anti-semetic. |

People who say that the Confederate flag represents racism are ignorant of what it stands for. There are plenty of racists that march with the American flag.
I can understand if you live in NY you may have never seen your neighbor fly the Confederate flag. Why would they? The flag was the flag of the South, not the North. The winner writes the history books, and Im sure it was and is still portrayed very negatively north of the Mason Dixon line. But dont come down here and look down at anyone who displays it. You must understand that down South it is displayed as history and to honor those who gave their lives for their country. |

I am still left to wonder however, why some people in waaaay South Jersey have a Confederate flag in the back window of their truck? We are just over the Mason Dixon line, but we're not that far south. ![]() |

I can top that one. I was in Ireland this summer and as I drove through County Cork, I saw many Confederate flags on people's lawns, cars, homes, etc. Why? Because, I found out, the nickname for inhabitants of Cork is "The Rebels". Still, it was a pretty strange sight to see, nonetheless!

And it pretty much sums up that many Southerners never met a Northerner that they liked. Since many from up North came down to take advantage of the South after the war. Union soldiers commonly mistreated civilians when they were stationed here during reconstruction. After reconstruction many memories never faded and Southerners were always generally distrustful of the Norths motives. The South for better or for worse has always resisted change, it is very deeply rooted in tradition and a culture more unique than any other part of the nation that someone always seemed to nosing in and trying to change things. |

Yes I agree it is ignorant, but that seems to run high in some people LOL!In these sick individuals' minds the war was not about independance so much as it was about slaves, so they see the confederate flag as a new white supremacy symbol.. I wouldn't bash someone who flies the flag or tell them to take it down. This country is based on free speech and our ancestors died to defend that right. Who was that person said "I don't agree with a word you are saying but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?? Was it Jefferson? Sorry just wondering out loud. ![]() |

The civil war is definately seen differently here. It's studied in school as part of 'our' 'past'. Not the norths past, not the souths past, but the United States past. I fail to see how the confederate flag doesn't represent racism, or better yet, enslavement and all it entails. The United States has but 1 flag uniting us all. That's all that is necesarry. The confederate flag represents rebellion, ignorance and hatred. Display it if you want, but don't demand others respect it. It still brews hatred and intolerance. IE, this gerenal dislike (at best) of northerners. The past is best left in the past. The war was a hardship for both sides. You have allowed it to fester within. Ppl on both sides died fighting this war... even northerners. It's foolish to still be carrying on over it. And believe it or not, we northerners have traditions we share also. The south isn't alone or unique by any means in that area. Our ways of life are different, but by no means better or worse than anyones else. Anyone can move anywhere in this country they please. That's the great thing about the United States. Ppl will move where they want to, need to, or where opportunity beckons. Change is happening all around, and it's a good thing, not bad. |
