LOL Yeah, this is unfortunately true! I can't help it- they used to be NY...it's hard for me to wrap my brain around this "new" still NY somehow but play in NJ thing.
I don't go to live games so easy to forget. I'm not really a huge sports fan..but when they were all still physically within the boundaries of NY this was my position. LOL

That would mean the Buffalo Bills are the only NY football team. Go Bills!

I grew up in the Capital Region and have lived in both the Adirondacks and the Hudson Valley; I have a pretty good sense for who people root for throughout the eastern part of the state.
Capital Region's definitely Giants-Yankees-Rangers-Knicks predominantly. The second-most-popular teams are the Buffalo Bills and the Boston teams -- I grew up knowing a lot of Bills and Red Sox fans -- but they don't approach the Yankees in terms of numbers. Mets and Jets are a distant third.
The Saranac Lake area's different, you get Boston teams on TV because their TV stations are based in Vermont; hockey's a lot bigger than it is further south, and few people care about basketball up there. Hard to say who predominates; the Bills, Patriots and Giants are all popular in football. In baseball, the Yankees and the Red Sox are both popular. As for hockey, the Rangers, Sabres and Canadiens all have decent followings, maybe the Bruins too. (I'm just guessing based on jerseys I saw and a few casual conversations; I'm not really into hockey so I didn't pay as much attention.)
In Orange County, it's more Giants-Yankees-Rangers-Knicks than anyone else from what I've seen, but you get more Mets and Jets fans here than you do further north. There are some New Jersey Devils fans too, especially as you get closer to Jersey, in places in Warwick that have high NYPD/NYFD concentrations. Hardly any Boston fans -- I was actually looking for some Celtics gear at the mall once and couldn't find it. The mall outside Middletown is one of the biggest in the state, too, so that tells you something.

Packers and Patriots (me) and Giants (husband.)
Yankees and Red Sox (me) and White Sox (husband.)
No basketball or hockey preferences for pro teams. I'm a fan of Syracuse. Husband is a HUGE, lifelong fan of Duke.
I'm a born-and-raised Syracusan but my mom's family and husband's family are mostly from MA/NY/VT. My dad's family is from NY/NJ.
