Hello all!
I'm having a hard time seeing really big, affordable houses on-line. I have 6 kids so I need my own apartment building! Can anyone recommend a good realtor or rental person?
Hi Andrea Jean
Since I, too, have been scouting out the area, let me share what I've found so far. Check out www.realtor.com (broken link)
You can plug in the city and state you are interested in, as well as definitive criteria, and view houses available that meet your needs. As the homes pop up, I've also clicked on the real estate firm representing the listings, and then view their listings too. I have also emailed two very nice real estate agents for more details:Moderator cut: realtors - send PM if needed
Tell them I sent you--I think they'll get a kick out of learning how extensive online networking is!
One of the things I found, though, is that taxes on a larger home are a killer. (They separate property taxes from school taxes.) I also found, however, that the taxes on homes outside of Plattsburgh city are less (though still higher than where I live now).
Good luck!

Reason: realtors
April in plattsburgh can be a mix. It could still be cold and snow, or it could get warm and the snow melts. In april 2002 I remember it was about 90 one week.
Good news first: Tons of kid soccer teams!!!! The city has a great recreational department that sponsors not only fall city leagues but now we have an indoor arena so there is also spring soccer as well. It is very cheap to join and there is probably a large section devoted to all children sports on the city of Plattsburgh web page. The historic brick homes on the Old Air Force Base were built around an oval, so that is where they are held. It is perfect for this purpose and gives parents a great time to interact as well. The city has its own recreational director who is young and dynamic. There are also lots of sports soccer within the school districts. The ones who are the most competitive districts are Peru and Plattsburgh and Chazy. Their housing prices will be the highest also since their school districts are considered "better"........Beekmantown is also improved, I believe......This district went through a lot of personnel changes but has a lot of the higher priced homes and has a lot of lakefront property as well........Also, there are new homes being built on Cumberland Head road this year due to a new connector road...........I am sure that would be a great deal.........Housing is relatively cheap here and Cumberland Head is right near the lake and there is a bike path and when the lake winds come from the south there is a windsailing club from Montreal that comes down just for that reason. Lots to do outdoors by the lake......summer and winter.
BAD NEWS: Easter is totally unpredictable..............Lots of times, there is a snow squall or two. It can be really muddy from the snow melt. Depends on time of year...........Last year was nice. That's why I asked when Easter falls in 2007.............the later the better for nice weather........Springtime up here isn't the best........mud season. Great late spring, summers, falls, and then early winter. Late winter, early spring........nice indoor time. Doesn't last too long though. OTHER GOOD NEWS..........Springtime is theatre time here. Tons of community productions, all the high schools do an excellent job on plays and there are skating shows by the local clubs......You have lots of things to do with your children and they just love being involved. There is also renovation being completed right now on a circa 1920 movie theater in Pburgh. It is being turned into a modern performance theatre with a lot of community, volunteer work. It used to have its own organ and a new one has been found to replace the original. It was turned into a 2 screen art house movie theatre for the last twenty years or so.........now begiinning a new life.......Good luck!
Hey, Plattsburgher, does your end line mean you're starting a new life (ie that you're actually moving south?)--or were you referring to the new chapter in Andrea Jean's life?
Hey, I just saw the photos (on a different thread) of Clay, a suburb of Syracuse. I am wondering if it would be possible for anyone to post photos of Plattsburgh. I would love to see them--and I'll bet I'm not alone!
I too am intrested in this area but was a little disturbed in the amount of registered sex offenders in this area and manyof the towns in the Adirondock Region

I was unaware of this. Where do I go to find out information about registered sex offenders? I would be interested in checking this out.

Glad that Easter is later this year for Andrea Jean, but realistically, yes, there can be a snowfall even that late in the spring up here..........It is skiers delight, but a pain in the butt for most of us. There is a week off then for the school systems and tons of us go somewhere south, so if you are coming up to meet people at that time of year, you might want to make absolutely sure that they are going to be around. Half the town is gone to either Florida, Myrtle Beach or cruises, etc.............It is the big holiday before Memorial Day and since school lasts until the end of June up here, we love our long school breaks.........(Teachers love them even more........)
As for sex offenders here, the police chief here has small children himself and I would be willing to bet that wherever you are, this town knows who and where more of these guys are than wherever you live right now. Yes, we have them, you have them and everyone has them. I believe the stats are that it is usually someone that the victim is related to or knows most often.....The difference is we know who they are, where they live and even have a website where they register. It has been in the local papers........It isn't like a big city where people can just disappear into an apartment complex anonymously.........There was something in the paper last year about a person living too close to a school. At the next school board meeting, there were so many parents there to protest that the guy actually left town. It is still a smallish town in many ways.........and people protect their own and each other's children..........very community oriented.
As for me...........am doing my own research. Not a Pburgh native, but according to family and friends, could not have paid private tuition and received a better quality education for my two. One is in medical school, the other has a disability. They both got exactly what they needed from this school system in massive quantities...........Skilled, caring teachers who gave the gifted one extra credit in a World War 2 class for work completed outside the classroom, Key Club community efforts, band and chorus, drama, challenging classes and great neighborhood friends who carpooled together and are still close even in their 4th year of college...........The other has had after school sessions with the teachers and the best of special ed teachers, PT, OT and speech all at no cost to us except what we pay as taxpayers. My friends in other parts of the country pay all kinds of money to try to get the type of caring in school that my kids get........Bottom line for me: tired of winters........a southerner by birth. Getting older and researching parts of North Carolina.......We shall see........??????????????????? That is how I found this site originally and hopefully have helped some others in return. Not a clue about Pburgh pics.............maybe on the city/county webpage?????????? Will look into it.................

Thank you so much for your comments! I hadn't really even considered when everyone would be off school. As you can see, I am still in the early stages of planning my tour. Of course, the whole reason we are going then is that MY kids will be off school. Do you know when the actual break is? I suppose I could look at their school site, but it's easier to ask here! If it is anything like here, various schools have their breaks scattered around before and after Easter.

Yes, yes, I know that sex offenders are here, there, and everywhere, but I would still like to see the stats and compare Pburgh to my current town (percentage-wise). It won't change my mind about the area, but I like to be informed.
Does anyone know of a site that provides comparison data on the number of sex offenders in various towns?
