Albany is a good place
but you don't say where in upstate NY you wanted to be
eastern...Buffalo rochester
central.. Syracuse utica
eastern..Albany rennsalaer
southern..Binghamton Johnson city
or
UPSTATE watertown pulaski
you really need to be more specific on what UPSTATE means to you and not the fact that anything above 143rd in Manhatten is considered upstate

thanks for your suggestion bkqc but a baseball town wouldn't be a good fit for me!
as far as upstate goes, i'm pretty open to any area that seems like the right place for me and my work and that is in my price range, about $250,000. so unfortunately, any place anywhere near manhattan would be out of the question!

Well, Chautauqua or Cattaraugus Counties would be perfect for you. You could probably even get something much cheaper than 250k if you were looking. Lots of natural beauty and it is quite inspiring. Lots of crafts festivals out this way and there are always quite a few antique shops and art galleries around, so they must do pretty well.
I think near Chatuauqua or Ellicotville, as someone else mentioned would be great. But anywhere in the area would probably do well...
Lake Erie, Chautauqua Lake, Findlay Lake, The Allegany State Park, Ski Resorts and Snow Country, Amish, Rolling Hills, Chautauqua Institution, The Lily Dale Assembly, Grapes and Wine Country...the list keeps going!
Some towns you might want to check out
Chautauqua, Mayville, Westfield, Fredonia, Bemus Point, Ellicottville, Little Valley, Olean, etc, etc, etc!

Cooperstown is much more than a baseball town. It has one of the best opera venues outside of Manhattan, in Glimmerglass. It has a wonderful upscale turn of the century inn on a gorgeous lake, covered bridges ala New England, Victorian mansions, and lots of cute B&B's, amongst other things.

You could try Saugerties in Ulster County. It has a restored downtown with lots of antique stores and restaurants. It's probably less than two hours from NYC, but far enough away that it is affordable. And it has its own exit on the New York State Thruway.
Good luck!
