If you have children, pretty much all of the school districts are at least decent, but I'd suggest Sackets Harbor, General Brown and 1000 Islands. If you are use to a more diverse SD, Carthage, Indian River and Watertown City would fit. There is also The Immaculate Heart Central Schools in Watertown and a couple of Christian schools for private options. South Jefferson, Bellevulle-Henderson, Lyme, LaFargeville and Alexandria Central round out the Jefferson County SD's. There is/was military housing in Copenhagen, Lowville, Gouverneur, as well as select locations in those Jefferson County SD's.
I forgot to mention that Carthage has the K-8 Augustinian Academy and Gouverneur has St. James, which is a K-6 Catholic school. Gouverneur is in St. Lawrence County and had military housing at one time, but the contract expired. There may be some availability there, if you can't find anything closer though. Lowville and Copenhagen in Lewis County had or has military housing as well and in the case of Lowville, there may be military families that live in the former military housing or other private housing there as well. Places like Clayton, Antwerp, Philadelphia, Calcium, Evans Mills, Watertown, Carthage and West Carthage have or had military housing as well.
Are you looking to buy or rent? Have you checked with resources affiliated with Fort Drum?
I am looking to rent. I need 1bdr, off post. Information I found from resources affiliated to Fort Drum are not suited to my needs. I'll be moving to Fort Drum next week.
Can anyone help me with off post housing? I'm looking for a 2-3 bd house near post (not longer then 15 min drive) and i don't wanna spend too much, if anyone can give some info about life in fort drum it will be great... my husband just get his orders and we gonna be there in the end of july
Maria, craigslist is a great place to start....craigslist: watertown classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events
Also try local realtors, some manage properties.
Life at Fort Drum, it depends on who you talk to really. Opinions will vary. I have grown to really love the area, took some getting used to. One thing I can say for certain is get ready for winter, you better love snow because you will get it in spades.
