Cuba I've heard is very nice, but haven't visited.
Caneadea I haven't been to since I was a kid--it's a foggy memory.
But Angelica--well now.
I've probably caused some jaw-injuries by making people on this forum yawn over my swoons about Angelica--but I've got to say again that Angelica is one gem of a town.
If you're looking for a place to retire or buy a summer home, and you like the Catskills and a timeless upstate NY/New England type of town, one that's as easy-going as it is close-knit, with lovely country around you, and even the county fair on the edge of town, which you could walk to within 15 minutes of anywhere in town, then you'd love Angelica.
And your dollar goes far there in terms of home buying.
The pictures on the city-data.com site for Angelica are very apt. Try Googling for more pictures--a number of sites/"photo albums" should come up. It's just a beautiful little town, just about perfect. And it has a couple of nice restaurants now, too. It's going to be snowier than the Catskills since it's in Lake Erie's snow belt--but that's a plus to me. I've never seen a man-made place that's as pretty in snowfall as it is in mid-June, except for Angelica. Then again, I've never seen a man-made place as lovely.
My only reluctance about it is that I always dread it's going to get "discovered" and thus will become something other than what it is now--which is exactly what it was when I first went there in 1970.
Alfred, also in Allegany County, is a very lovely town, too. It's arranged very differently--more spread out in and up the side of a valley, like a Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, or West Virginia town. But it very much has a center, nicely anchored by the very pretty Alfred University campus and a small downtown. Gets pretty crowded with students, but retains a lot of charm.
Still, though, Angelica is a world unto itself. Ever see the "Twilight Zone" episode about Willoughby? This is where you want to get off time's train....
