Earthquakes Upstate?
Hey,
Im considering moving upstate, saratoga area, and im doing weather info, earthquakes, tornados, etc.. and i see that there has been an earthquake (measuring5.1) in Plattsburgh , i think in '02.
Was this felt by ppl living near Albany?
"Seismologists unable to explain earthquakes on US north-east coast"
isnt that helpful?! LOL.
Besides more snow , what kind of "stuff" happens in that area?
thanks

Technically we're in an earthquake zone but they only happen once in a blue moon and you'll never even notice. Tornados do happen but they are rare as well and may only touch down to knock over a couple of trees. Neither are anything to concern yourself with. Your house is more likely to get hit by lightening, not that that's an every day occurence either.
The only reliable condition to take into consideration is snow unless of course you're in a flood zone which is much more common around Binghamton.

I'll second Sgoldie. There really isn't much to worry about as far as natural disasters go for most of upstate NY. OK, global warming may change that, but if it does things elsewhere will probably be much worse, and there's not much you can do about it (or to accurately predict where is safest) anyway. I think allowing fear of natural disaster to dictate whether or not to move to upstate NY is a mistake. Parts of California, New Orleans, coastal Florida..... sure, an issue to seriously consider. Upstate NY, nah.

I agree if Al is right then we are in the sweet spot for GW. And this area has a fault that would make San Andreas look like a crack in a side walk. But it is very deep and no worries... get a snowblower and you will be fine and a good hat. People in Cali don't even blink at a 6.0...

I suppose the biggest natural disaster problem in upstate NY is floods. Just make sure you live far enough away from major rivers and creeks. It's also best to steer clear of small creeks, which are sometimes prone to flash flooding.
