That's because you made poor choices.

Health insurance is a waste of money. Either get on Medicaid or just show up at the hospital, they have to treat you right??

And a 401k?? Really?? That's wasteful. Don't you know the state has your back?? People that put money in those are fools. And. Don't let the employer matching you 50 cents on the dollar cloud your judgement. People that save for retirement are sucka's that don't trust SS!!!

I don't have access to cheap apartment like that either but I seen on the innerweb that Fayetteville is loaded with them.

And that was with a college degree, so on top of the expenses you laid out, add in student loan repayment.

Also, I haven't seen a 3-bedroom apartment in a "nice" area with utilities going for $775 around here.
How many people/children were you supporting with that $34K income?

I wonder if the gas workers may have something to do with your last statement? I saw some home rentals listed here, but I'm sure that they vary in terms of location, condition, etc: elmira apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

That's pretty close to what rents would be in oneida. One right now for 800 plus. It has a map and its not a horrible area. Little dumpy and getting worse but short term it's prolly ok.

Every place is gonna be different but I'd put utilities at about 300 in most cases. Budget plan should keep heat at 200 if you can stand it cold( my stepson keeps his apartment at 75 and howls about the 500$ bills). 60-100 a month for water and 20ish for trash.

So figger 1100. And I'll tell ya what, 3 bds go fast. When I'm working on one I gotta move fast cause they are prerented. Almost always HUD cause for that money most people would just own.

Just me and my wife (also a college grad, employed, with some loans to pay back) living on the 34k.

There are very few places in the city of Elmira that I would rent. The whole place is deteriorating, and FAST. Even if the rental unit you find is decent, chances are good that there is a drug den down the street. Because of that, it is hard to pick a "good area" of the city - it is block by block or even house by house, which is deadly for property values. Add in the almost weekly meth busts, in both Elmira and Corning, and the fact that they've started consolidating schools and bussing kids away from their neighborhood schools, and the outlook for a middle-class family around here is getting scary. (Which is why we're looking to move before my wife gets pregnant.)

Having children - in this case, two children - makes a huge difference in tax liability.

What about Horseheads, Elmira Heights or areas outside of Corning like Gang Mills or Painted Post?

What about another part of the state? What kind of work would you be looking for?

We currently live in Horseheads (I put Elmira in my profile line because NOBODY knows where Horseheads is!). The Heights - at least, the school district - keeps threatening to merge with either Hhds or Elmira. Taxes are crazy all over this area, too. I work in higher education, and I've applied for jobs in many areas. My wife's family is in upstate NY, mine is in the midwest, and we've talked about trying to find somewhere closer to "halfway" for everyone. Our biggest concern is finding a place where we can put down some roots - somewhere with convenient access to decent medical facilities and specialists, shopping, cultural stuff, good schools (for our -hopefully - future children). Not a big city, because we both love hiking and camping, too. This area has some of that, but the medical facilities are a biggie for my wife, who is currently driving to Rochester to see a specialist. We've investigated the Rochester area, but it isn't winning us over. (It isn't BAD, either, it just didn't feel like home - if that makes sense?)

Well, the Rochester area has plenty of good school districts. I would areas like Victor, Canandaigua and Honeoye Falls-Lima would fit what you are looking for.

What about the Buffalo area? Perhaps a small town school district like Alden, Iroquois(mostly in Elma) and East Aurora would fit and would put you closer to Rochester, as well as your family.
