Try Nyack in Rockland County. It's very hip village with lots of shops and restaurants. But it might be tough find something decent with your rent limit.

Back when I used to go to White Plains from tmie to time, I always thought of it as a very busy place, full of businesses, lots of traffic, sidewalks full of people, big stores and shopping districts, etc. This was back in the late 50's thru the mid 70's. I have no idea what it's like living there, or how liberal/conservative it is. The whole arae down there is much too crowded for me.

When I think of places for Liberals, I think of something like Woodstock, which is probably too far from NYC for you.
