How do you make lemonade in a city full of corrupt politicians?? If the City ever gets a decent mayor who doesn't hire all his relatives and goombas, it might turn around. I'm so glad I left that place...

I am originally from Dallas, Texas. I had the opportunity to experience upstate New York by way of Utica, NY...quite interesting I must say. Being a degreed African American, I was taken back at the lack of minorities in white collar jobs; As a matter of fact the only jobs where I found African Americans employed was Wal-Mart. I interviewed with several large companies where I was clearly qualified(Met-Life, The Hartford, etc), but only received closed doors. I also noticed the clear division of other races as well, which was clearly disappointing. I did notice that this is a great place to start a business. I have returned to Texas, but truly miss the 4 seasons and the small town feel; If the Lord says the same, I plan on moving back to the New Hartford area the summber of 2011 for at least 4 years while my daughter attends SUNY Albany. The friends that I made there are precious to me, and I have a job waiting upon my return.

Not surprising as Utica and many of the Upstate cities are or were very blue collar in nature. While there are some nice areas and cities up here, it would be nice to see more "diversity" in white collar sectors in many cities in Upstate NY. I would say that Rochester and Albany might be the best at doing that right now. You do see it in Buffalo, Syracuse and Ithaca to some degree though.
Also, you have to keep in mind that many NE cities are not necessarily just segregated by race, but by ethnicity even among Whites as well. For instance Utica has strong to noticable Italian, Bosnian and Polish American communities. So, that goes even deeper in the region in a way that you wouldn't see in say Dallas.

I noticed that there was a great 'distaste' for the Bosnian and Polish Americans in Utica; Honestly I could not tell one ethnicity from the other and did not bother trying to divide the masses..my motto...'love the one your with'.....can't we all just get along?
I noticed a lot of interracial dating and marriage....I chalk that up to everyone trying to get through the winter as best as they can...a warm body has no color(smile).

You see quite a bit of interracial dating throughout NY State. It does have the most Black people than any other state in the US and is just a state with many diverse cities in general.
Utica is a heavily Italian American city. So, maybe that could be a part of the reason why there is a social rivalry, I guess. At one time, the mob ran the city, actually.
Also, it seems like the kids get along fine and Proctor High, Utica's only public HS, is very "diverse". Same with the other schools in that district. Utica City School District - Homepage
Thomas R. Proctor High School - Homepage

Even though we were officially considered in the Chadwicks area,(New Hartford address), the school that my daughter attended was Sauquoit High...there were only 3 blacks; Not only was my daughter accused of stealing(an IPOD that was conveniently left on a bench in the girls locker room) 2 wks after enrolling, she was spit on the day after the Presidential election. My daughter only gained wisdom and strength through this ordeal...she actually misses NY.

Utica has the largest refugee center in the Northeast.
For a city its size, its among the most diverse in the country and over 30 languages are spoken in the school district.
The city is historically Italian and the mob ran Utica through machine politics for over 50 years.
Utica is filled with diversity. Italians, Irish, Polish, African American, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Burmese, Bosnian, Russian, Ukrainian, Lebanese, Japanese, etc. in a city of 50,000.
Also, theres a good percentage of Utica from NYC. More so than usual.
The most famous people today from Utica are all Black.
Tiffany Pollard aka New York from Flava of Love is one. Will Smith is the DE for the NO Saints is another. Josh Wright played college basketball at Syracuse University. Dave Cash who played MLB for the Phillies.
You have to look around a little bit harder than that dude.
I think the reason why you're equating Utica to be white is because like most politics, theres alot of croneyism in Utica politics, always has been. Italian politicians are keeping everyone else out of reach while keeping everything else for themselves. Those in power stay in power, and its extremely corrupt.
Your problem? your daughter ****ing went to Sauquoit. People in Utica wouldnt go there on a bet.
Shouldve lived in Cornhill. Then your opinion would be a complete 180.

Quite honestly, Utica is a ****hole, but to say its not diverse is one thing that is 100% false.
Thats one of the more surprising aspects of it. Other than that, Utica just sucks.
