Default Pine Bush, NY?? Saugerties??

We are in the process of looking for a decent place to move this coming spring, that is somewhat equal distance between Albany and NYC., preferably on the west side of the Hudson River.

We have to consider school districts as a MAIN factor in our decision. A son who will be going into 7th grade and a daughter who will be entering 4th grade (fall of 2008).

We also don't want to spend over $400K for a house.

Does anyone have anything positive (or negative) about these two towns or do you have other suggestions?

We are moving to this area from Western NY do to job relocations.

Saugerties is much closer to Albany than NYC. Pine Bush is a little off the beaten path. But I am assuming you will either be working in the city or Albany? Both?

You might also consider Wallkill and the Washingtonville areas.

I have spend a good deal of time in Saugerties- it is a sprawling town- some areas much more desirable than others. Another area to consider would be Red Hook across the river...

Thanks for the response....My husband will be working in NYC for the next year or so, then to Albany for a couple of years, then back to NYC....so instead of having to move every other year, we'd like to settle someplace in between both cities....he won't be commuting everyday, so that would help a bit.

Well- Saugerties would be pretty tough. It is well over 100 miles- that drive would be a long one! And Metro North is not that close by...

Wallkill would still be a great option- much closer by car and you have the option of Metro North- just driving for about 15 miles to catch it in Beacon.

Something to consider...

And when he transitions to Albany, it would be an easy drive straight north.

We have lived the last 20 years in Monroe and Washingtonville. We initially moved to Monroe from Bergen County, NJ because of the schools. Our oldest was just entering first grade. Monroe had a great education reputation and homes were affordable. When our yougest was entering Middle School we moved to Washingtonville for a couple of reasons. Monroe's population had grown rapidly and they were about to embark on a $250 million school expansion and taxes were expected to go through the roof (which they did). We found the schools in Washingtonville to be smaller and our children received more personal attention, plus taxes were considerably lower. Both our children have since graduated from Washingtonville, received scholarships and eventually graduated college. I regularly commuted into NYC and it took anywhere from 1 to 2 hours depending on the time of day and means of transportation (car, bus, train). When I went to Albany, I would drive to Beacon (about 20 minutes) and take the train (about an hour). Now is a good time to buy as most homes have dropped about 20% in value and there are quite a few homes on the market in your price range. Property taxes, however, are high and continue to rise about 10% a year.

I know the Washingtonville/Salisbury Mills area. It's beautiful. It's Great. and it's about an hour and ten minutes from NYC.
