Default What can you tell me about Hudson, NY?

Tell me anything. I lived in Albany for a few years and loved it but wanna try something new upstate. Mainly want to know where most people are working, rental prices and how the nightlife is downtown (Warren Street?). It looks amazing in pictures, I've never been there myself.

Hudson has been getting better slowly in the last few years. But personally I never liked Hudson. I always called it Slime city Hudson. Warren Street is not the best area either.
Hudson is a place where you definitely need to see yourself before you move there. Albany , its not!
Rentals and house prices are affordable in Hudson, but don't know if you'd want to live there.
Good luck,
Pam

Thanks for the reply....could you elaborate a little more on why it's no good? Crime, schools, generally crappy people, boring....what is it?

You're telling me this street isn't the best area?

Hudson's changed considerably in the past decade - trendy, artsy more affluent but pockets of old Hudson remain. Don't know why someone would diss and dismiss so much as above. Prices of houses are going up and up and more rehabs underway all the time. It's an interesting town with an Amtrak station.

Default Impressions of Hudson

Since you're not getting too many responses, I'll give you my two cents.

I don't much about Hudson, but I've visited it several times. My impressions were that it's an architecturally rich town, with beautiful homes throughout the city, not just Warren Street, has gorgeous views of the Hudson, and is an antique shopper's mecca. That said, the place is really dead on the weekdays, there's a lot of scummy and sleazy areas of town, the Nightlife is almost nonexistent.

So, it depends on what you're looking for. Nice place to visit, but to live?????

BTW, the history of Hudson is pretty interesting; it used to be a major prostitution town. No kidding!

It use to be a major whaling port too. I've lived in Columbia County close to 30 yrs, with 4 of them in Greenport.
As with any place, there is good and bad. Yes there is crime and (to me) alot of drugs. Because of the amtrak and because of its general location alot of drugs from the city get brought here.
I LIKED living in Greenport, dont get me wrong! Just like albany there is good parts and bad parts, and Both are in and around warren street. Hudson is not a major city, therefore night life is not the same.
Warren street is ALOT of Antique shops. the schools are decent (wonderful compared to some here in the south). If your into outdoor recreation. Hudson is great. All sorts of stuff to do, catskill mnt, mnt mohonk, Berkshire mnts. There are some theaters around, both movie and live performances.
At 1 point there use to be (lets list)
Melinos
joes
joes on 3rd
warren inn
kappy's
the other side
morrisons
1/2 moon
St charles
the iron horse (gate)?
These were/are? bars all within a few blocks of each other.... not sure if this is the kind of nite life you are looking for, and since i havent lived there in years, dont know which are still open.
If you have children there is all sorts of clubs, sports, and after school activities.
What else would you like to know?

Thanks for the replies, I'm just thinking about it right now - nothing serious. I'm shooting to move somewhere upstate (or out of state) about a year from now.

I'd be renting, and probably not staying very long term...just looking for a change of pace and something a little more relaxing/cheaper. I've read about Hudson's crazy history, it's pretty interesting. The architecture is what draws me to it, as well as being only 2 hours north of NYC. I'm coming from Long Island and I'd prefer to stay at least somewhat close. Not too concerned about crime/drugs, sounds like there's more than enough bars!

Big question remaining is where are people who live there working? Is there any big employer in the area, or is most of the economy centered around the antiques/weekend getaway tourists?

Thanks again!

Hope this helps..
I live part time up there and the other on LI I have been doing this for quite some time now and have watched Hudson grow and change throughout the years. The history there is very interesting as is the architecture.Hudson boasts the highest concentration of antique shops in the smallest sq miles in the US also I believe it was voted into the top 10 Historical towns in the US. Alot of eclectic inflow from the Village in downtown Manhatten which is accesible by Amtrak at the end of Warren, only a 2 hour ride. Some people call it the West Village of the North. The restaraunts are slightly overpriced(IMO),and the nightlife is virtually non existent. And if you are looking to grab some wings and a beer and kick back with a game..you won't find that in Hudson. We have tried that many times and always end up in Albany.During the week it is pretty much dead, but if you are into the history stuff you could spend hours on a Sat afternoon just walking up and down Warren. The blocks surronding Warren are mostly populated with low income people and housing. So there would be no reason to venture off of Warren at all.Like I said it is growing so I do believe in the years to come even the outskirts will be cleaned up as well.I believe the majority of the employement would be at the CC Hospital at the top of Warren.Take a ride up and check it out..it's only 2 hours away and it makes a great day.
Hope this helps Good Luck

Interesting thread.
I'm an artist and have heard that Hudson has several art galleries and artists are moving to the surrounding area and town. Some have relocated from New York City. Is Hudson becoming trendy?
I was wondering, does Hudson have many visitors from Manhattan? And about how long is a drive to Manhattan?
