And this is from someone who has no connection to the city, except that i lived in a crappy apartment there for a few months. Fredonia is no safer. In fact, because of the college kids, it is less safe. Not that Fredonia is bad or anything, but Dunkirk isn't any worse.

By the way, if you ask someone in Dunkirk where to find some drugs, most of the time they point you in the up Central Ave. in the direction of Fredonia, where people have enough money to buy large quantities of drugs

And where is this terrifying street in Fredonia you speak of?
you miss under stood me.

yeah, what about the rest of the development that is happening in the city?

id bet you there is more going on in the city of dunkirk than in most places in western new york. the pontiac dealer moved because another dealer abandoned their locale, like many many dealerships are doing all over western new york and the rest of the country.

go look at the crime rates of dunkirk, and places that are actually bad. dunkirk has close to no crime.

The FBI publishes annually a book that goes into detail about crime rates and statistics in the USA's largest cities and towns. When I lived in West Hartford, CT I used to use the book while at the West Hartford Public Library to research crime in various cities and suburbs around the country. Check your local library to see if they have the book. Larger libraries should carry it in their Reference section. FYI. Dunkirk and Fredonia have crime rates that are considerably below the national average. And violent crime is also quite low and not as pronounced as some in this forum would lead you to believe.

You can get the data right here on City-Data.com. The crime index for Dunkirk is 259.9 (not what I personally would consider good) and it is 117.0 for Fredonia. So which side of the rr tracks would you rather live on?

Question What other dealer?

the Pontiac dealer built the Vineyard Dr. location as a used car lot, moved cars back to Lakeshore Dr. then made the building larger, and took there whole operation out of the city. Location, location, location, as they say in the sales biz... love the crime rate stats, that's why I'm south of RR tracks, thanks CrissCT. dO YA UNDERSTAND ME NOW , lol

Actually, I believe the national average if you are going by the City-data.com figures is around 330. That being said, the figures quoted for Dunkirk are substantially lower than the national average.

Smile Great Place

Ironmom.I have lived near Seattle and liked it well enough. We moved to Fredonia last year from a University (Ivy League smallish town in NY) I have to tell you we love it here. Everyone is so friendly. Our neighbors bake cookies for us. The farmer's markets are great as are the roadside stands. Everything you may need is within a mile or so. The homes are very reasonably priced and the taxes about the same as in many NY small towns. Where we lived before we came here, a place that is touted as one of the best small towns in the USA, well that had a lot of druggies down town, plenty of places to avoid full of sleeze etc. and a fair bit of crime including several murders. Even the maligned Dunkirk the crime seems petty and the usual sort of thing that happens even in rural areas these days. The Smell person must live in a world of make-believe!

Dunkirk has some nice streets and some not so nice, but the hospital seems friendly and we have had reasonable treatment there. It is true there are some poorer people, but they seem OK, most of them hard working families. Some of the decendents of older Italian and Polish families(immigrants) do make the Spanish racist remarks we have seen on the board-they forget their own roots maybe? On the other hand we love the Italian and Polish old people, they are cute.

The students seem mostly rather well behaved compared to most UV towns we have known. You will always get a few rowdies, but nothing like the large college towns with Frat parties typical for college towns. We live 5 mins walk from campus and never hear a thing. It is largely education and music I think.

The schools are good here and the teachers really interested in the kids. The High School music is excellent. There are quite a few programs and places here for Special Needs population that one does not find as easily elsewhere. The schools are exceptionally clean and have their own pools, good sports facilities too.

The only negative we have found is that the doctors are a little lacking, a bit rushed.

In summer there are free summer programs for kids, supervised very well, plus lots of entertainment outdoors for the family. Free tennis and golf courses all over that are around $15. The nearby areas are very scenic too (did I mention Fredonia is very pretty with Village green etc.) and with the thruway a mile away getting places is easy-Buffalo, Erie and NIagra Falls are all less than an hour away. We walk all the time here, also down in Dunkirk and have never seen anything that would scare us. Lots of bigger stores here like Penneys, TJ Max, Walmart, Peebles and a new Plaza going in next year. There is no prison BTW, that is a few miles away and is a rehab place I think.

We would not wish to be anywhere else, this place has all we were looking for (we are middle aged with school aged kids) and more. It is the friendliest town we have ever lived in and we have lived lots of places.

Go for it!!!

Smile It all depends

Last year I relocated to Western NY from the south central US and didn't really no what to expect. Dunkirk, like many towns varies from street to street. There are some lovely neighborhoods (as well as less desirable pockets) and the housing is more affordable than Fredonia. My husband and I don't have children, so the school district is not an issue, and we personally love being so close to the lake! The power plant is along the harbor front, but is really a beautiful piece of industrial architecture.

Dunkirk and Fredonia really run right into each other. . . and are both so small that you wouldn't really even think of them as being separate towns. We have had nothing but the best experiences with local businesses, contractors, neighbors, and have even found our grocery store to be better than the ones in our previous city with over a million residents. The people are friendly and speak English everywhere we go.

We don't regret our choice, and plan on being here for many years.
