Just wondering if anyone thinks Utica will ever be able to return to half of what it was. My mom grew up there and has told me so many great things about it. If it were still like that, I'm sure there would be tons of people still living there. I wish it were still like that.
Does anyone see the possibility that it could make any type of return? Maybe at least attract some people instead of losing people every since the 50's. Maybe somehow make the downtown fun? I really think it would be great if this city came back to life. |

I have family in Utica and the only thing going on there are restaraunts and bars. They don't bring the jobs in that pay $50,000 +. It is a very depressed economy with fairly high taxes and lots of crime. The outskirts are really nice and relaxing. It's a shame that they can't bring in some bigger business and keep the college grads around.

Yeah. My mom was born there. We visit every summer to see my grandparents. Utica, near Higby Road and Oneida Street where my grandparents live, is probably the only good area, as well as New Hartford. The area by the hospital is pretty bad. New York Mills is the biggest f****** dump I've ever seen.
It's so sad that a city that once had so much going on is just going into the pits. Pretty sad that there's cities still like that. ![]() |

I left many years ago. So did the offspring of the many textile, tool and die and GE factory workers.
The unions forced the factories to relocate to the South and eventually overseas. Only thing left was huge mental institutions and more recently hardcore prisons. The families of the incarcerated relocate from NYC finding plenty accommodation from empty houses and Social Services. So they stay, breed and supply the gene pool. When I was there last I saw all kinds of people walking around talking to them selves and urinating on the sidewalk in broad daylight on Genessee St. More than half the city is one way or another on the Dole. Property Taxes are horrendous. There are 2 seasons, Rust and Snow Many of the old beautiful Victorians have been burned down by hoodlums. Sad |
