ok, so i have had a change of plans, i was given an awesome job offer in the rochester area and now have to find a small city or town to live in.
We would like to be either south and/or west, up to 45 minutes away from the Monroe Community College area. The job is in 'metro park' which is just across henrietta drive.
Any ideas?

I'm not sure where Monroe Community College is, but the small town of Medina is only 45 minutes west of Rochester. Historic village on the Erie Canal, with some great real estate deals, & great proximity to Rochester, Buffalo, Batavia, Lockport & the Finger Lakes. The taxes are lower in Orleans County than in Niagara or Monroe Counties. Lake Ontario is only 15 minutes north, and you can still get a small house (cottage) & property on the lake for under $100,000 - the cheapest waterfront properties in NY are in Orleans County.

My husband and I live in Maine and due to my husbands company downsizing, we are also looking at moving. My husband has been offered several positions in Upstate NY. But I have no idea where to begin house hunting. We have four children. One in elementary school, one in middle school and one in high school- our 4th is only 10 months old. I want a small safe school dist. where our children would be welcomed. My biggest fear about moving to a large city is finding the right environment for my children. Any tips would be so appreciated. We would be looking for housing in the upper 400K or. Thank you all!!

You can move pretty much anywhere you want to in Upstate NY due to your price range. What are the locations that you have been offered in Upstate Ny?

Ithaca seems interesting, I would enjoy a college atmosphere, as long as there's no homeless lurking around, it's rampant here in California near the colleges. Am I asking for too much? We are in our late 40s and early 50s, no children, employment is not a concern, just wanting some peace and quiet and quality of life. Thanks!

well you are in luck because the upstate scene is just pathetic just remember when you are looking at those prices the reason they are so reasonable is because the taxes, property and school, water bills, etc often match the amount of the mortgage payment here. but the beauty of the state is in opposition to the poor quality of the mafia style ny state legislature that i am sure you have been reading about. we have no leadership here just flawed egotists who think ny is their personal pie to cut up and divy out to their friends and supporters when they get elected which is every 2 years here so as soon as they get elected they have to start campaigning all over again but they have no term limits and have fought that tooth and nail it will never pass. from a hypocrite of a governor in spitzer who is already plotting a comeback to the shady characters in this ny legislature melodrama it looks pretty hopeless right now. i am sure the dems will run cuomo over our interim governor as its starting to look like he has no say over anything.
