Nicest New York State New England charm towns?
Hello,
I am thinking about moving from CA to New York State. Please advise on towns with a nice green scenery around (water and hills are a plus) with a real New England charm, safe for a child but not dead in terms of little shops and some art life - thanks!

There was a very recent thread on this same topic. Try doing a search using "New England". Lots of info there.

Hammondsport has a real New England feel to it...has a village green ringed by shops, coffee house, restaurants, church, etc.
And it sits right at the head of Keuka Lake...one of the Finger Lakes

Of course I am going to say Skaneateles. I grew up in Ct, and my first impression of Skaneateles was that it was like a small Connecticut town. Question for you, are you ready for snow? Lots of snow?
Good luck.

Is there any particular region of the state you'd prefer to live in? Is proximity to NYC a priority? If its not then there are many more opions avaliable to you. The VILLAGE (not necessarily the whole town) of Pittsford NY, a suburb of Rochester is very beautiful and has what many would consider New England charm. Historic downtown on the Erie Canal. The greater town of Pittsford is more upper middle class-suburban, and probably not where you would be looking for...but the village sounds like its just what you are looking for. Also close to the relatively more job opportunities and culuteral assets of Rochester than a small isolated town would be. Also consider Fairport, just west of Pittsford.

Skaneateles and Cazenovia. Both are on a lake and within commuting distance to Syracuse....

I've always been fond of Cooperstown. Callicoon and Narrowsburg might also be options, even though their downtowns are more or less useless. Also be sure to check the options I recommended to you on the PA forum.
