Relocating in Fishkill NY
Hello
We are a french family from the Alpes region, and we are planning to move to Duchess county, NY, for a 2 years period.
We are looking for the best area where to leave in Duchess county for a family with 3 children. What about the town of East Fiskill or any town close to Fiskill? What about district schools there? recreatives ?
We plan to rent a family house (4 rooms at least), what are the prices that we need to consider?
We have a lot of questions, so any help will be very appreciated
Thanks a lot in advance

Hi there,
I currently live in Fishkill NY with my little girl. It's definatly a family orientated area with a good school district. No complaints on my part.
Fishkill is the more "afffordable" of the two Fishkills (East Fishkill vs. Fishkill). East Fishkill has larger, more expensive homes. No matter how you look at it, they are both decent family orientated areas.
I currently rent a 1 bedroom for $900. For a four bedroom your looking at anywhere between $1,800-2,500 per month. Most rentals in this area are posted in the Pennysaver. I suggest you look here Yorktown PennySaver Classified Online Ads for Westchester & the Hudson Valley, NY for a more accurate assesment of prices (Fishkill's zip code is 12524)
Other than Fishkill, Wappingers Falls is the next town over (about a 10min drive). This area has the same basic vibe as Fishkill.
Hope this is helpful

Do you know if there is some french community there or other european nationalities group. Is there an internationnal school in the area where our kids could continue to learn french?
Thanks again.

I don't know if/ where there is a french community there. I know there's an Italian Center & a Polish Center...I'm sure there are many others. I'm not sure where you could look? Maybe on meetup.com? I join local groups there that share similar interests. If you put in the 12524 zip code, it will list all groups in that area. I'm also not sure about the learning French thing either. I know definatly in high school your children will have the choice to study French but I'm don't know about before that. I'm sure there are some tutors in the area that would glady continue French education for the kiddies.

Hi!
There are many rentals in Dutchess County. When you arrive, your best bet is to contact a local realtor who will help you.
The school districts do have English as a second language classes. There are also classes for French nationals after the regular school day. Where these are held I am not sure, but I imagine the local school district can direct you to the correct location.

There's an Alliance Francaise in NYC but that's not so close to Fishkill.
There might be something in White Plains. Also, there is Vassar College in Poughkeepsie with a strong French department. You could inquire there or do an internet search. Good luck.

We live in Wappingers Falls but are the town of East Fishkill. I would love to answer any ?'s u have. The schools are very good in E.F. but some are over crowded but we have a referendum vote coming up to vote about them being expanded. It is safe and very friendly! Feel free to email me with any specific ?"s. i know what its like to move to a place where you have NO contacts or family. I would be happy to be your first "friend" here in Dutchess. We have 3 kids. 2 boys (8 & 5 & and girl 2 1/2) so I know that aspect of life here plus I work in Fishkill and hubby in LaGrange.
