Are you looking to live on a lake, in a rural area, town...what? Do you need ammenities (can't live without a K-mart [fell in whatever you *have* to have] nearby) or are you more of an "I can make do with what's at the local store, and if I'm in the mood for a mall I'll travel 45 minutes."
If you're a bit more specific, there are a lot of people who seem to know the really upstate areas.
If you don't *have to* have NY, some of the little towns near the border of NY in Vermont are very nice.
I really dont have any specific place in mind,Im originally from New England so I know the area well.If Im 25 miles from the nearest big city, thats fine.
Local store is OK with me too.
The place must have internet connections/cable tv,If I have to pay extra for it...fine.
Just need to get away from the hot months of Florida thats all.
I would recommend looking into the thousand islands region:Sackets Harbor, Alexandria Bay or Clayton it is so nice up there in the summer and lots to do Best of luck to you.
I am going to suggest the Plattsburgh area because there are affordable places to live that have water/stream/lakes nearby and are on beautiful sites. Some are mobile homes outside the city that even have views of the Adirondacks. You are close to a growing city/county area and can jump on the freeway (I-87) and go to either Montreal or Albany, Saratoga.........and get there pretty quickly since it is a main route, not a 2 lane highway........There's a lot to be said for that 65 mph route with no traffic backups and waiting for a safe place to pass the slower cars. Can you tell that I don't like to drive back roads to get places? I am sure there are plenty of places that have what you want. Look at the county names that appeal to you on a map and google their newspaper/real estate businesses ads and go from there. Good luck.

Agreed. The thousand islands region is gorgeous in the summer. Aim for something on the St. Lawrence River and near Alexandria Bay.
