That's A LOT of people we're talking about then and may include a lot of people that don't think about things like that.
Well, they all receive taxpayer money or taxpayer-funded services, right? Why single out public employees (who earn their pay, deferred and otherwise)?

Individuals pay into Medicare as well as SS retirement and disability. The taxpayer is receiving the benefit s/he paid into.
And the majority of pension funding (at least at the state level) comes from employee contributions and investment returns. The retiree is receiving the benefit s/he paid into, at least for a time, and earned either way.
