Op-The second and third week of October are usually the best time for fall colors and ck has listed great links to check out.

Sean- I agree with you about total taxes-Kitchen table issues really.

I just want to add that weather really does have a big impact on peoples decision. Right now it is the third day straight of continuous rain, its wearing me out.
Came back to NJ and finally saw the sun after 4 days of clouds Upstate.

I'm not a fan of the Southwest because I love trees and the occasional rainy day. The desert landscape is great to visit but I don't know if I could live there.

Yeah, I'm pretty much looking in the Southeast (SC is my limit South, maybe Georgia) or Northeast, wherever I can find a good job in my field.

Good for you! I know you've been talking about that for a while. Good luck to you. Do you have a job lined up?

No matter where you go in NYS you're going to find and see wonderful things. NYS is a beautiful place which is overshadowed by NYC.

I'm on Long Island and September/October are a great time to visit if you find yourself downstate. The beaches are open for strolling, but a little too cool for swimming. Days can be warm, nights in the later part of September on might have you donning a light sweater.

We have amazing wineries on the east end, and famous Montauk Point lighthouse which was commissioned by George Washington.

There's the Gold Coast; a portion of which was F. Scott Fitzgerald's inspiration for The Great Gatsby, and a number of these old estates are open to the public. Old Westbury Gardens and Castle Gould are two worth checking out in Nassau. In Suffolk there's Vanderbilt's Eagles Nest (a summer home) and Oheka Castle.

There's history galore from early settlers to Civil War to rummrunners and the moon.
President Theodore Roosevelt's summer White House, Sagamore Hill, is in Oyster Bay Cove and is enjoyed by history and architecture buffs alike.

My humble neck of the woods, Stony Brook and Setauket, were home of the Culper Spy Ring. We have many old homes which date back to the colonial era, the Revolutionary war era, and beyond. A few homes (and one local restaurant) were on the Underground Railroad.

Our local museum, the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages is affiliated with the Smithsonian and has one of the largest, most amazing displays of antique carriages. There is also a wonderful display of the works of William Sydney Mount. The current program is Long Island at War.

If you like to golf -- plenty of that as well, including a few golf courses like the Bethpage Black, site of the US Open in 2002 & 2009. This is a public golf course, everyone is welcome.

At 120 miles long, there's plenty on LI.

Did you know: Suffolk County, LI, NY has more lighthouses than any other county in the US. I'm lucky enough to live close to one of them, the Old Field Point Lighthouse.

I'm most certainly a history buff and so you're speaking my language! I wouldn't be all that interested in wineries, but the rest of your post seems right up my alley, thanks for the suggestions. My girlfriend and I have decided to make NY our next travel destination.

We will be looking at bed and breakfast type lodging for sure, this is always been my favorite type of lodging. No phone? Good. No TV? Better! Rocking chairs and a wrap-around porch? Best!

I'll probably bring some fishing poles, I hear trout can get rather large in the up-state, but I'm really just interested in taking in the beauty of the landscapes, the history and cultures that I've really never experienced first hand...

If you had 8 days and 7 nights and a budget of say... 5K. what would be your dream NY vacation? From a local's point of view?

If your interested I can get the info tomorrow about a lodge my wife and I stayed in in the ADK's.

No phones no innerweb no TV and no cell service. We stayed in the fall so it was super pretty.

Day trips to Lakes Placid and George. Went up Gore Mountian. Lots of good food.

Our place was pretty reasonable at a couple hundred a night but you could spend much more. Becareful of the room tax. It's like 25% so your bill can be a big surprise.
