A closer look at the ambitious Chain Works project in the old Morse Chain/Emerson Factory complex (from the Ithacabuilds website...lots of pics):

Ithaca Builds « A Peek Inside the Future Chain Works District «

This is a huge project for a city the size of Ithaca.

Not sure about that one ckh. I believe they are suppose to be quite affordable (especially for downtown), but they certainly are small.

The latest entry for the Ithacating blog is of a more positive nature overall:

I hope the convention facility gets finalized asap, the downtown area needs a pick-me-up after the mess which is the Commons renovation.

It looks like housing construction is about to start warming up again and the concerned citizens in Lansing are going to get what they wanted.

Finally is probably what many people are probably thinking.

Ex, do you recall what that area of Downtown Ithaca was like pre pedestrian mall?

Oh yes. I went to DeWitt Junior High School downtown in the mid 60s (now the DeWitt Mall). It was a fun place. Plenty of retail options (everyone went shopping there in those days), though the Triphammer Shopping Center had opened in Lansing, most folks still went downtown. With State Street open to vehicles, there was a hustle-bustle feeling to downtown. Urban renewal hit in the mid and late 60s and much of the urban fabric (including many historical buildings) were gone. I was in the Navy when the Commons was built. The change in downtown activity was drastic when I returned. Of course the additional shopping malls in Lansing helped change the retail mix downtown by drawing more locals out of the Commons, and gearing more downtown shops toward specialty items (head shops, touristy stuff, used clothing and bookstores).

I guess I'm just an olf fart reliving the "good old days".
