I believe you have said before that you are from Jamestown. If you want to say Rochester isn't part of WNY, I'd argue Jamestown is more part of the Southern Tier than WNY. Rachacha, I agree, we are better off here than in Buffalo for the most part; It's not about being "lumped with buffalo", just stating the fact that Rochester is part of WNY. If you want another source; go to "westernny.com" (the website for the region's toursim info) and see the list of counties they give. Monroe, Wayne, Ontario and Livingston counties are all included. And they state that the "major cities" of WNY are Buffalo and Rochester.

If you are going to use that as your source, you might want to read the page a little closer. Even they say that Western NY is actually from the middle of Rochester and west. And that is coming from a few arbitrary souls who don't have a clue in the first place. Its not an official website for the region's tourism or anything, just a website that a small newspaper has made. They even state that the boundaries they use are different from the official boundaries that the state has used. Monroe/Orleans county boundary and west. The rest are just wannabes!

How about we compromise. Buffalo is now "Weststate New York" and Rochester is now "Western Upstate New York", that way everyone can be happy

Haha, seriously this has been argued for ever. In the 90's, a kid from Rochester at Canisius College wrote an editorial in the school paper about the exact topic and it was the same thing...everyone from Buffalo saying it was only Buffalo and everyone from Rochester saying it was Rochester and Buffalo.

I have a feeling that's because in Rochester we hear that so and so is "the best in Western NY" (be it a car dealership, lawfirm, restaraunt etc.) and they are local companies. In Buffalo, they've just always assumed that they are "Western NY" exclusively because technically, the Buffalo metro area is defines as "Western NY" by the NYSDL...and they are the furthest west in the state you can go. There are two "Western new yorks" in reality. The western NY oktaren is referring to, "Westernmost ny", is often called the Niagara Frontier; while Rochester and everything directly south of it is called the "Genesee Valley". Put them together, and you get what would be the broader "Western New York". On a ligheter note; I think everyon in Rochester AND Buffalo agrees that Westchester and Rockland counties are certainly not "Upstate New York"

I always thought western ny was rochester to buffalo and going down to erie. Central was syracuse to utica/rome. Capital or Hudson valley region was glen falls to the border with mass. and down to hudson. Down state was westchester county to nyc.

Same with Central New York.
Syracuse is the Buffalo of Central New York. People in the Syracuse metro area assume that they are "Central NY" exclusively. Everyone in the Utica area also believes they are located in "Central NY". CNY is a very loose term that changes meaning depending on the person or circumstance.
Unlike Buffalo (which is called Western NY and also the "Niagara Frontier"), the Syracuse area has no other name besides Central New York. Meanwhile the Utica metro area is also called the "Mohawk Valley" (in addition to Central New York").
