Default 1 Hour Away From Sussex County Nj?

Hi,my wife, daughter and I live in Sussex county and we'd like to move,it's getting to crowded and expensive. My wife wants to stay close to her family if posible, about an hour away,is there any place you can suggest in NY where it's less crowded, less expensive, more rural(and going to stay that way)?If not an hour away, how far would we have to go?Thanks.

Why is your area getting more crowded? Who is moving there, and from where? the "expensive" part usually follows when an area sees a big influx of people, usually people who have sold their homes for a lot of money. I believe in getting to the root of problems, and I see this cycle repeated throughout this forum. If you haven't already, check out other states/cities to see what I'm talking about.

Shohola (PA)...Dingman's Ferry, Hawley, Tafton, Greenville NY

By no means should you go to Port Jervis....please no - bad schools and it floods there.

I live in Shohola and I am in the boonies LOL! Going out on Rte 6 towards Hawley in Pike County is quiet. There are houses going up here but I still have about 500 yards till my next neighbor and I don't see it getting any busier anytime soon.

If those areas are too busy for you then you will have to hop into Sullivan County NY (if you can stand high tax rates) or out to western Pike County. If you look in Sullivan, stay far away from Monticello area, and beware that the Delaware floods around there. If you go to Pike county, be mindful of the Delaware as well, and also that Milford/Matamoras/Westfall TWP will get more busy. Anything east of Greenville NY is generally getting busier by the day.

Also you can get into Pine Bush NY which is still pretty quiet and you might still eek out an hour drive. The area is not too commutable to NYC so its growth has been slowed compared to the rest of the area.

hey, why not move to orange county, ny? Warwick is less than 30min. from anywhere in sussex and is quite rural and hardly crouded, but benefits from being only 1hr from nyc. for something more rural, try Florida, NY or Port Jervis. Both also 30min from sussex

Yeah, you're not going to get any population/cost of living relief moving to Orange or Sullivan. Your best bet is PA, in Pike County.

I think I answered this on a different thread......the Pa thread perhaps.
My daughter lives in Sussex/Warren NJ......we are an hour away in Brodheadsville. All homes in this area have to be on an acre or more.
We moved here from NJ. Tried a gated community first and didn't like it after awhile. We are just far enough here to feel country but to get to main stores and shopping in less then 20 minutes. From here there is a back road to the Outlet mall on route 80 and 611.......also, from this location a huge library is close by. Within 20 min. you can go see the 12 Regal theaters which go in the day and evening times. Off of route 33 to 248 there is plenty of stores for shopping Boscov's , Bon Ton, Wegmans, Walmart.....the wonderful Palmer Mall and a tad bit further all the malls and stores of Phillipsburg, NJ.
But, living here is much more peaceful......taxes are less then NJ but, still never going to be what a state like DE has ...that is for sure.
It takes us one hour to visit our daughter and a half an hour to visit the other closer to Easton. I'd never move back to NJ.....the peacefullness and roads less traveled are wonderful.....

Default Sussex County move

I don't know where you work or if you work.....

There are still some very nice Rural areas of Sussex County, but the taxes have skyrocketed in very township.

My son and family moved from Wantage to Dingmans Ferry, Pa. 3 years ago and have a great home. They bought a foreclosure, gutted it and completed renovated from floors to appliances. 4 bedroom colonial- paid $149 and has been appraised last year for over $275. he drives 45 minutes to work each day but says the lower taxes are well worth it. He pays approx. $2100. yr.

If you are looking to relocate home and job...head up to Susquehanna County in Pa. you are 35 min. to Scranton with allthe shopping, eating and entertainment of the big cities and 40 minutes to Binhamton NY.....prices in most areas are still great and taxes are so much lower than NJ. We have a home in a small town called Union Dale. Use it only Apr-Oct. although it can be used year round. Lake front..paid $120 in 1999...now houses around the lake are selling for over $300K...Taxes on the Lake front home runs $1900 where those not lakefront with comparable homes run about 1000 year....

Good luck
