People in Rural NY had better WAKE UP or you'll find yourself living in a open sewer! Each cow produces over 100 lbs of fecal waste per cow, per day. Do the math! This farm is as large or bigger than those out west in Iowa. Ask the residents out there what they think of these operations.
It's bad enough that the Finger Lakes region is a running sewer but now they are reaching out to other areas of NY as well. Do your home work before buying a house in an Ag District. Nowhere is safe from these factory farms if you buy in a zoned Ag District.

So.... do you suggest we should just uthenize all cows, which provide us with essential dairy products and vitamins, as well as protein.......because they poop?

The dairy products produced by these industrial agricultural operations are laced with artificial growth hormones, antibiodics and other food-safety, cancer-causing additives. There are much more sustainable, evironmentally-safe and healthier means of producing dairy products. Our nation did just that up until 15-20 years ago when dairy went towards industrial scale, killing off the family dairy farms in most of the country. It is tragic to see that certain rural NY communities are buying the lie hook, line and sinker and allowing these monolithic entities inflict their business model on communties and simply externalize upon those communities all the negative economic and public health risk issues that time and again end up being the final result. It will not be question if but a question of when there will be a animal waste containment leak. Go to www.factoryfarm.org and take a look of how these animal factories are harming our rural communities and environment. Many containment leak stories and statistics are provided on this site.
There is NO positive element associated with the introduction of expantion of these operations into rural communities. The jobs are all minimum-wage at best and the overwhelming majority of these jobs factory farm jobs across the nation are filled by illegal immigrants and/or seasonal workers.
Great article! Anyone living near one of these factory farms knows all about pesticides, well water contamination, extreme air quality issues, health problems, garbage flies and rodents not to mention swarms of illegal farm laborers. All this lowers property values and allows the factory farmers to buy up your home for cents on the dollar.
84,000 head of cattle? On one farm, in NEW YORK? Are you kidding me?
Crop farming around Factory Farms means plenty of pollution. They dump massive amounts of manure slurry on the corn fields. They're doing it right now, as we speak, on snow covered fields all over the Finger Lakes Region heading east towards Lake Erie. It stinks so bad near me that you can't shovel the snow out of your driveway without getting a severe headache from the hydrogen sulfide and methane fumes. When the snow melts, the ground is still frozen and it washes off into the creeks and rivers or sits in puddles in low areas until it saturates the ground to the point that it cant go anywhere. Thus the E Coil contaminated wells popping up all over rural NY. Have you ever tried to sell a house with an E Coli and Coliform contaminated well? You CAN'T! Of course the farm never has to pay for ruining your drinking water. Buying a house is Rural NY is a high risk venture. Do your homework.
