Amherst has Upstate's largest number of high-income households; Buffalo (yes, Buffalo) is third - Buffalo - Business First

This can be viewed in terms of raw numbers and in terms of percentage.

Just to supplement the information or to find more specific information about any of the towns, this site is pretty good too: New York State

For instance, here are some examples: Census Tract 015700 in Onondaga County, New York

Census Block Group 009007-2 in Erie County, New York

14620 Zip Code

Saratoga Springs City School District

Ithaca, NY

I think the University of Buffalo has the same effect on Amherst, as the campus is actually located in Amherst. So, I think that has a lot to do with the number of affluent households there.

Also Colonie was second in terms of the number of such households and again, its proximity to UAlbany may play a part in that as well.

Vestal which houses the Binghamton University campus is also up there in terms of percentage and the number of affluent households. So, I think you are on to something in terms of the proximity to the SUNY University Centers, as well health care professionals living in these communities.

# of households with the income does not the town wealth make.

% of the town with the wealth does.

Go look at the % for each town.

Yes and in that regard, Pittsford is the top town. Pompey, just SE of Syracuse was second. Niskayuna, Mendon and Skaneateles round out the top 5. 6-10 are Rush, Chatham, Binghamton(town), Bethlehem and Clarence, in that order.

This is also for towns/cities with at least 1000 overall households.
