We spent the last weekend in Lake Placid with 2 other couples. We travel a lot and found the vibe to be off there last weekend. People were rather unfriendly and seemed very aloof and unhappy. At first I thought it was just me, but when I mentioned it, our friends said they felt it too. We'd say"Good morning" to people and they would just walk on by. Places of business were not very welcoming and it really was a turn off. It was so noticeable that we mentioned it to the minority that were nice. The waitress at the Adirondack brewery was a sweetheart and the guy driving the shuttle at the Bobsled complex was great.
As I said, we travel a bit and find most people in vacation spots to be welcoming and happy to see you. We're not high maintenance, treat others with respect, and are generally pretty happy people. So was last weekend an anomaly or is that the vibe there? Sad, because the area is beautiful.

While I was there last month, I got the idea, based on a few conversations with shop owners, that the locals are seeing a lot more demanding/vocal/unfriendly types than in the past. And that it's wearing on them. Sounded like it had been a long summer.

Lake Placid has always been rather ritzy. Saranac Lake is a bit more small town-ish, and it's right next door. I visited there twice this summer and had no issues with people. I tend to avoid Lake Placid because you do find some snobbery there.

I guess I can understand being sick of tourists. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza and Now thinking about it, some of the guests did seem kind of snooty. For what, I have no idea. I'm sure that could send some service people over the edge by the end of summer. We try to be nice to everyone, but it certainly didn't fly well there. It's honestly the first time in all our travels that it really seemed to be a bad vibe. We all said it was too bad as it's a bbeautiful area, but we'll not go back anytime soon.
