I am a 27 year-old woman expecting to move to New York next year, fresh out of a divorce. I'm looking for a good area in the Hudson Valley to live - I can take my job with me. I like the outdoors, and I love historical architecture. Most importantly I'm looking for a community I can really plug into and be active in. Whether its knitting circles, volunteering at food shelters, helping with festivals, etc. I really need a town where there is an active community. Of all the places I have been looking, Kingston looks like a nice town to be a part of and they have a nice website, although I might live in Hurley to avoid some of the crime I hear Kingston has.
Can anyone make some recommendations please on places to live where there is an active community? I really appreciate it, not being from the area at all.
If schools are not an issue the Hudson Valley has many community active small towns. (I personally would avoid Kingston.) At age 27, I would recommend New Paltz (if you are looking at Ulster County) so you would have people in your age range. I would search Facebook for community pages. New Paltz has an active site and you can get a sense of how people think here.
New Paltz is definitely worth a look. Same for Fishkill, Wappingers, maybe Goshen. I could see how Cold Spring might be a match. Kingston is a fine option too.
You'd be bored stiff in Cornwall. It's more a "family-oriented" town, there isn't much going on there, and it's pretty isolated with no direct access to major highways.
I concur with the majority here... Check out New Paltz.
It's got everything from sewing bees to festivals to wild and woolly politics.
Cold Spring is another option, but in general has more expensive housing options because of its location closer to NYC with MetroNorth station right in town.
Both towns are fun places and good for a young single adult who wants to get involved locally.
