I got caught going 60 mph in a 45 mph zone on Route 79 in the town of Caroline in Tompkins County.
The limit is 55 for most of the road between I-81 and Ithaca; the 45 zone was only for a few miles. I was coming from a 5 hour trek from Washington DC, and I was very anxious to get back home to Ithaca.
From what I've been able to research, 15 mph over ticket can net you a $200 fine and 4 points on your license. Any idea what that will that do my insurance? What do you think my chances are of getting rid of the points I go to court?
I was clipped in Dryden about 10 years ago for going 45 in a 30mph zone. I appeared and the ticket was knocked down to 5 over, no points and a $100 fine. I was a student at the time and did not have a local DL - don't know if that was to my benefit or detriment.

Well that's good news. What was your defense? Or was your mere presence good enough?
Agreed with hvexpat. You can certainly try and fight it, but will you really have time to come back to Tompinks County for some random far away court date?
If you fought it, they most certainly would reduce the punishment to some lower offense w/o points violating your license. Your call.
Btw, I got hit with that same EXACT speeding charge you got on some rural stretch of Route 32 going north in Ulster County. Speed limit briefly dipped below to 45 mph from 55 mph, but since it's a rural streatch, well you know the rest. Anyway, this was around Easter 2013, plead guilty and it was $175.00 and 4 points on my license. Get this, it was billed as $80 for the municipality and a $75 NYS surcharge of course.....It was harsh.

Yes, since I'll be in Ithaca. Caroline Town Court is only 15 minutes or so away, depending on how fast you drive

Yikes. Why didn't you go to court?
By the way, do you think my age (20) would affect their willingness to reduce my ticket?

I didn't go to court (against the advice of many, my mistake) because it was my first traffic offense. I figured that I was guilty, so no defense could prove that I wasn't speeding. Little did I know, it's not about the crime as much as it's about the money. As to your age, I think you should fine. Wasn't really necessary to clean up, other than standard court dress code. Literally, just show up. You should be fine.
Just to follow up for all future readers, I went to court and the DA was unwilling to reduce it past 5 mph over which is still 3 points. However, when the DA was in another room, the judge told me to come back another time when the DA wasn't there and he'd give me a better deal. So we set up a new date and we did just that.
This time, the DA wasn't there and the judge brought it down to an 1110A "failure to obey a traffic control device" which carries only 2 points and a $100 fine. I completed an online point-reduction course so I believe my driving record and insurance will not be affected.
