Default Burlington VT equivalent in NY

I'm a college student looking for a new school, and alot of where I went wrong last time was the area, more in terms of types of people and things to do. I would love to go to UVM or Champlian College because they are in burlington VT, and I love the feel of that town, but can't handle the cold. Anyone familiar with towns like Burlington or Northampton, MA know of any where in NY that compares? Or anywhere south more for that matter?? Im looking for a laid back almost psuedo hippie feel like there and also an aspect of outdoor appreciation where i wont have to wear 2 million layers to walk to classes haha any suggestions?

I'd suggest Ithaca but it gets cold and snowy there too.

I agree with garmin--both on Ithaca being a similar place, and on it being about the same as Burlington in terms of temperature. New York State is cold in the winter.

Perhaps Austin TX? Fun college town, no need for winter clothes.

New Paltz, NY. SUNY college, cute town and gorgeous surroundings with tons of outdoor activities. Very liberal/hippie atmosphere.

Now it is cold in New Paltz, but it's much better than Burlington, VT.

If you really want warm, there are plenty of college towns in the south that should fit the bill. Like Athens, GA.

What about Bard College in Red Hook? You can't beat the Hudson Valley for natural beauty. Bard has many free spirits attending classes there.

I have a daughter at UVM and everyone said it was like Charlottsville VA on the lake, and it is. Why not try University of Virginia, Radford or several others in western VA.

Definitely check out New Paltz. It's half way between Albany and NYC. You will like the town. The school has a good reputation.

I think West coast is about your only option. I only know alittle about The South , and what you discribe I doubt you'll find there. ( I could be wrong ) of course.

Don't think New York is cold? Drive I-84 from the Thru-way to Danbury CT in winter! The Champlain Valley is some of the warmest realestate in western New England. That's why you see all the farms out that way.

Oh and another thing lol. For the type of colleges and towns you seem to be looking for I would say Vermont ranks at the very top. Put up with the cold and you'll get a great education.
