Not sure what your situation is but I would recommend also looking into other areas as your 950 month will not go far here in NY. I did live in Greenville,SC for few years & it is very affordable there. Still came back to NY yet again anyway in 2006. They call people that do this halfbacks lol.

There are many places but if NY is what you want be prepared to not get much for that budget.

In parts of the state, you can find a nice 2 bedroom for that much, but that means looking further north.

What about looking in Ulster County in/around Kingston or southern Ulster across from Poughkeepsie?

OP is looking for a Long Island lifestyle on an upstate budget. That's a problem.
The farther upstate you go, the more affordable it is, but the less it's like Long Island.
Even the mid-Hudson region is generally above her price range. Besides that, it sort of prides itself in being not like LI.
I lived in the Hudson Valley for 25 years on both sides of the river, and it was rare to come across people from Long Island. As I've said before, the two regions are worlds apart.

I tend to agree with some posters here that she should be looking into some more affordable southern states north of FL. Maybe do some surfing of the city forums for city areas in the Carolinas, Virginia, etc and get some input there from fellow ex-Long Islanders in her age group and line of work.

Google is your friend.

The fact that it is in Rockland, which is overall more expensive than Orange, should signal something. For instance... Why.

Go beyond this particular forum, and research locations.

You're a big girl now, Pamela.

I moved from the Hudson Valley down to the same area you're in now and I hate it too. But, if you've never been to Kingston, I recommend that you go there first. Some parts are like an inner city, some like suburbia, and a lot is rural, but it is nothing like Long Island. Will you be looking for a job? How often will you being going into the city? Do you plan to commute? What kind of nightlife do you want, if any?

Personally, I loved the area. I lived on the outskirts and liked the country/hippie atmosphere. I'll be moving back to the vicinity within the year.

If you have any questions, you can always PM me.

Check out the Raleigh area. You can spit in any direction and hit a half dozen relocated NYers
