Hi there, I live in Dutchess County (approx 30 min south of Hyde Park).
When I think Hyde Park I think 3 things: Cullinary Insitute of America, Vanderbuilt & FDR Mansions and, lastly, I think very small family orientated town.
As for your question about all the good and bad on the area....I can't say much bad about the area. If you like that small town appeal, you'll love it. For me personally, I'm a city girl & this would be a drawback for me...but to each's own!
The good thing about the area is it's designation as a historic disctict b/c of the mansions (Vanderbuilt and FDR). They are open to the public and are gorgeous! I frequently visit them to enjoy the beautiful scenery (gardens, mansion, Hudson River and many trails). If you haven't been already you will absolutely love it (esp the Vanderbuilt Mansion)!
Another good thing is having the Cullinary Insitute there. People from all over the world come to Hyde Park just to take courses at this Cullinary. There are top of the line resturants w/ top of the line chefs all over town esp. on campus as a result of this school.
The only other good thing I can think about is it's proximity to Dutchess County Annual Fair. Every year the county has a fairly large fair and Hyde Park is only like 15min away from it.
Sorry I don't know more of the school district. I imagine it to be decent being that the area is good.
I hope this was helpful.
