Sorry for the belated reply but thank you for the info. I was surfing into some of this and getting linked to streeview scenes and this town seems pretty durn interesting...looks like a great place to explore (might cut back on my Ithaca time to check out more of Bingamton)

So far....Sharkies seems like my likely lunch spot....I notice from google down the street there is a little neighborhood that has some sort of European Market corner store near a big catholic church.

The links are great...esp that gold domed church tour. Thank you all !

Yes, it is definitely gritty and has an older feel in the more urban areas, but it isn't scary, for the most part.

The Clinton St corridor is generally referred to as the "First Ward," which still has areas of interest although it was a more interesting walk when I lived nearby (heck, that was 1990, one of the EJ factories was still functioning then).

Binghamton’s Buried Stream of the First Ward - Bearings
Tales of Philly Sales - Signs and Stories

Sharkey's is so authentic I'm surprised they have a website. I doubt the decor has changed much since the baby boom. Your nose will tell you it hasn't been refurnished since the NY State smoking ban. The spiedies do have a bit different flavor than Salamida or Lupo's.

It could be off putting to those who like their urban areas redeveloped. The only redevelopment around there, alas, seems to be offices for social services.

I thought that all of the EJ factories were closed by then. Where these factories located in the area?

I believe that Downtown Binghamton may be the only urban neighborhood really seeing any serious development, but I could be wrong.

The one I remember working was on the east side of JC behind St James Church. Looks from Wikipedia it might have kept going until 1998. Endicott Johnson Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I know what building you are talking about, as I believe that it is that huge building to the left as you go over the bridge to CFJ Park, Wal*Mart and the Gannett building.
