Norfolk-Norwood
I attended college in Potsdam, NY and am now considering returning to the area to settle down. Not being native to St. Lawrence, I don't know the reputations of the small surrounding towns. My current focus in on the Norfolk-Norwood area.
Does anyone have any insight? Is is one of the crappier towns? The schools seems ok, but test scores only tell part of the story. While I like both Potsdam and Canton better, I found my dream home in the Norwood area. Still, I don't want to buy a home in one of the towns with a dingy reputation, or place my kids in a lesser school.

I recently moved out of the Norwood-Norfolk area. I actually lived in Norfolk for about a year in an apartment not far from Hotel Grande, a really good Mexican restaurant actually. Anyways, I always considered both Norwood and Norfolk a bit of a dump. Like you said, Potsdam and Canton are both pretty nice. Some nice small towns to think of besides Norwood and Norfolk that are not too far are Waddington, Colton, and Pierrepont. I have lived in Franklin County (west of St. Lawrence County) almost all of my life and attended SUNY Potsdam as well. I would consider those small towns, unless you want to live more in the Adirondacks. If so, Star Lake and Cranberry Lake are very beautiful. If you have any specific questions, PM me.

Dream Home
If you found your dream home in Norwood, I suggest you jump on it! All the schools in that vicintity are decent (as they should be considering the high school taxes). Many of my family members attended Norwood-Norfolk school. They have only good things to say about it. It's a nice area and property values are fairly low, so you can get a decent place to live without spending a fortune. Taxes are higher though, if you live inside the villages. Outside of town you don't have to pay those extra taxes. There are some properties in the Norwood-Norfolk area that are not well maintained, but overall it's a nice place to live. And some of those older buildings and homes have historic signifigance. It's a shame more hasn't been done to preserve those old vestiges of the past.
I own a house in Waddington that I'm considering selling (right now it's available to rent furnished). Waddington is a beautiful little town (great school), but the property values are significantly higher than other surrounding towns because of it's location on the St. Lawrence river. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Norwood and Norfolk are all right areas. However, Potsdam school distict is the best in the area. I live in Potsdam and am originally from the Bronx so I am not at all biased. They are buildiing a hotel and a superwalmart and SUNY has a lot of cultural events to keep younger folks busy. Hope this helps.
