I truly feel sorry for military families looking for safe, affordable housing.
We are NOT military (not that it's a bad thing, I support the people defending our country). My question is are there any venues for meeting military or non-military people? We're a young, religious, and educated couple (<25) and not into the drinking/clubbing scene. We can get along with most people regardless of age, education, or socioeconomic status as long as they're friendly and honest. Don't suggest the welcome wagon, I already called the number....there hasn't been one for 20 years.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

we are thinking of moving to watertown ourselves, and would love to know what you think of the area? we have 2 children 7 and 9. we also lived in michigan, traverse city to be exact, loved it there. Perhaps if my husband takes the job we can both have our cars eyed suspiciously ...lol we also are not military but we get asked that alot and viewed with raised eyebrows, by husband is a travelling therapist so we have moved alot.we're hoping if we move to watertown it will be our last, I am tired of the moving so often. so perhaps we can strike up some conversation and see if we've things in common, maybe we'll all have coffee someday

Hello Hopeful and others,
I can relate. My husband and I moved to Watertown last summer and are not military. Everyone has been very friendly but as far as getting to know people, it has been somewhat difficult. It seems that many are very nice but already have established social circles through growing up here or through the military. I can understand why both would keep their circles close with so many people coming and going in the area. I haven't been on here in a while but I wanted to respond. We live in town so sometimes that makes things a little easier. We have enjoyed sledding at Thompson Park (the zoo there is pretty cute in summer), treking into Kingston, Canada for dinner and a night out, and going to Oswego for a better range of artsy movies. I think you do have to be willing to drive a half hour or so to really experience the area in all directions (weather permitting). We don't have a snowmobile or motorcycle, but they do seem to be sports we could use to enjoy the area once we get the disposable income. We love camping and being outdoors and enjoy a wide range of activities. Maybe we can team up for coffee someday. We're recently married, 30, spiritual but not particularly religious, and do enjoy going out but can also enjoy spending a night at dinner chatting with friends. Best of luck in adjusting to the area. Also, try Dry Hill for skiing. It's close and I hear that it's really affordable.

If you like camping Wescotts Beach is only 15 minutes from Watertown and it is locatedon Lake ONtario. It has very decent camp prices. With St Pattys day arriving there will be a ST Patricks day festival, it used to be held in the State office building. And with spring arriving there will be little carnivals at the local catholic schools, Holy Family has Mayfest and Sacred Heart also holds a carnival. Then when summer arrive there will be several local fairs, Jefferson county(watertown) Lewis County(Lowville), and I know there is a fair in Sandy Creek as well. There is a waterpark in Old Forget called Enchanted Forest, it is about an hour drive, I used to love going there in the summer. Please feel free to PM me if you would like to know more about the area or something to do. Also there is a local site up there that has a lot of information on the area and events that take place in the area. it is called Watertown NY Breaking News | Newzjunky | Watertown New York | Fort Drum | Newz, Sports, Weather, Traffic, Junkie | Apartments Housing | North Country | Thousand Islands | Newspaper | Lowville Carthage Ogdensburg Potsdam you can surf through the site, they will usually have banners up of upcoming events and such! Best of luck! The key to surviving there is getting out to do stuff!

Hello and Welcome to the North Country of New York. I am currently livivng in Watertown (after moving from Long Island in 2004). Might I invite you to check out the local Toastmasters organization? We are a small group of people with common beliefs coming together for a higher purpose. It is our extreme desire that when we encounter sadness - we leave laughter; find darkness - shine light; find aloneness - leave inspiration and hopefully replace the cold with warmth. All are welcome here. If you are interested, let me know and I will fill in the details and meeting times. Spring (yes, it really is just around the corner) is a time for rebirth and new growth. We at Toastmasters celebrate everyones "new growth." Please let me know if I can be of assistance. Blessings to you.
