Is it wise to invest in this area with a vacation property that could be rental income as well? Is the wine and tourism industry growing here?

I think so, but it may depend on where it is located within the region.

Bear in mind the property tax burden especially lakeside is going to be much more significant than where you probably come from.

We began vacationing in the finger lakes in the mid- 2000's, eventually bought a small vacation cottage, and recently retired and made it our home. In the ten past years of our experience of the area there has definitely been a steady increase of tourism and businesses related to it. Our experience is regarding the area around Seneca lake. Growth we have noticed: wineries, many, many more wineries! I often wonder how many the market can sustain. Limousine services have increased in relation to winery growth. Breweries-from a few to several now. There is even a brew trail one can follow. Cheese- there is a small cheese trail. Watkins Glen International- lots more than just racing. The wine festival is big, they just had a Phish concert, and we will be going to their beer fest in Oct., a newer event. Watkins Glen State Park is going to get a new grand entrance- it is very popular attraction. I am told taxes are high, but coming from NJ, they feel low to us, ha! There seems to be a lot of rentals available, so I don't know how much of a call for new places there are. Our house is actually in the hills to the west of seneca lake, in hunting territory. We are constantly approached by hunters wanting to rent our place. A house on a lake, with a lake view, or in the hills appeal to renters. The area around Seneca is encouraging tourism growth. We often visit Keuka Lake and the area around it. This lake seems more content to stay low key at this point in time.

Nice to have you in the neighborhood. It seems you've settled in nicely.

Thanks JW. The blend of rural living near so many things to do and the welcoming community made the move smooth.

My wife and I may be planning a trip up there next year. Is Fall the best time to go? I purchase and drink New York "Finger Lakes" wine here in Ohio. My favorites are Hazlitt, Fox Run, Bully Hill and Ravines. Are they good wineries to visit or are there other good ones? Any good restaurants attached? I also heard there is a casino openining nearby? It looks pretty classy online. Will there be a hotel attached?

Fall may arguably be the best time of year to come up due to the foliage near the lakes.

I believe the casino planned for Tyre is still in the planning stages.

Ray,
Hazlitt, Bully Hill, Fox Run vineyards I know well and are very good picks. In the past few years wineries have picked up on the 'people want to eat too' concept, haha! Fox Run has a small deli-style cafe attached to their winery. They were one of the first to offer food. Glenora has a fancy restaurant, Verasions, which I have not tried. Wagner has a very nice place called Ginny's. The view of the lake from their dining deck is awesome. One of my favorite wineries you did not list is Atwater. It is an estate winery. No food, but an excellent lake view deck to enjoy your wine from. Some wineries are bringing in upscale food trucks for weekends. I would suggest at least a long weekend visit. The wineries are very busy on weekends. On slower weekdays visitors are greeted warmly and much time and attention is spent upon you...:-D

My friend has property in a very remote area just south of the Finger Lakes. I've been there 3 times this year, and going back for a 4th and final time on the 23rd of this month. Some beautiful country in that region, and hopefully, we'll do more exploring since we'll be there by noon on Friday, and have a full day Saturday. It's going to be a long winter having to wait until next May to finally go back up there, but given the snowfall in that region, I'll pass. I deal with enough snowfall here in the Cleveland area.
