Factory Farms -- Caneadea/Angelica ????
Are there factory farms near Caneadea/Angelica? If so, how bad? Thanks for any info. I'm just a recent land owner with some questions. Thanks.

It seems factory farms are being pushed hard in much of upstate NY as a means of economic stimulus and 'growth.' The maps only show existing facilities, and may be a little out of date. Take a hard look at what is going on on your neighbors' properties in terms of building, razing, etc. Big cheap sheet-metal buildings are a bad sign.

Brand new silos and "Got Milk" murals on the side of buildings are a bad sign also. Look for tanker trucks covered in what appears to be mud (it's not mud, it's caked on liquid manure). Use your nose. Drive around down wind and if it smells worse than anything you've ever experienced, you'll know it's a factory farm. The ones around me can be smelled for miles. Look for what appears to be mud on snow covered fields. It's not mud, it's liquid poop. They spread on frozen ground and it melts off and runs into the ditches in front of your house collecting in pools. In the Summer, check out the creeks near the farms. If they are dead and have green slime, it's most likely from contaminated runoff. Garbage flies are another issue. There will be huge numbers of them in the summer months. Any old dairy farms that have significant construction happening are most likely coming back online as a factory farm. It's a huge issue out near me and getting worse year by year. Hope this helps.

Thank you both. It is a very important issue. I just don't understand how such a health issue can be allowed. The care taken around protecting the NYC watershed in the Catskills from CAFO's proves they know this is a genuine problem. It's an outrage. I'm amazed that it exists near the Finger Lakes given the tourist nature of the place. Beyond belief!

From the CAFO map (which is supposedly outdated), it looks like there's at least one CAFO in the NYC watershed area, somewhere near Highmount or Halcott Center. The runoff from that CAFO should drain into either the Ashokan or Pepacton resevoirs.
