Hi everyone, does anyone know of any private tent campsites in the finger lakes or southern tier areas? I will be with my wife and three small children so I don't want anywhere to secluded but I also don't want campers on every side of me, having to listen to huge rv's roll in and out, and have to worry about my kids getting hit by a car. In my opinion that's not camping. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Allegany SP has three camping areas. We used to tent camp at Red House, which is close to the main administration building, and it's possible to find fairly secluded sites there. We chose campsites on the outside, and most were screened from other campsites. I never camped at Cain Hollow, which is at the southern end of the park in the Quaker area, but my cousin always liked it there. I believe that the much smaller Diehl Campground in the Quaker area is now only for tent camping and maybe popups. I don't ever remember seeing anybody with a big RV camped there. That would be your best bet I think.
If you are considering cabin camping at Allegany, I'd suggest Beehunter. Most of the cabins are newer, and it's a short walk along a footpath to the Red House playgrounds/beach/miniature golf, etc. without having having to drive (it's a lot longer if you follow the road).
One thing to keep in mind is that all NYS park campgrounds and cabin areas have strictly enforced quiet hours, from either 10 or 11 pm through 7 or 8 am.
Letchworth SP also has some really nice cabin camping areas.
Sugar Hill State Forest, outside of Watkins Glen, has plenty of nooks and crannies where folks set up camp. In my hiking forays, I have come across sites here and there, I'm not sure how you'd know how to find them without stumbling across them though...
The fire tower on the hill has a camping area suitable for many campers. Tends to bring in horse people since there are horse stalls and horse trails all about. We have camped there a few times and found it to be very peaceful. There are no hook-ups. There is a restroom and some water pumps here and there. No assigned 'sites'. You just set-up where you want. I hike through the camp area a lot and have never seen it crowded. Best of all- it's free!
