Yeah, that is so true and I thought that was the case.

Some people may not realize that it is a huge metro that is the 14th biggest in the country and you don't necessarily have to live within the city in order to find what you want.

And most probably couldn't care less because depending on the posting source of the article they may be including communities that are in the next state or country....

The methodology is:

Job Market Index – 20 percent

Value Index – 25 percent

Quality of Life Index – 30 percent

Desirability Index – 15 percent

Net Migration – 10 percent

Using that, I still have to give Rochester a significant edge over Albany. Also, I'd rank Philadelphia, Providence, and Las Vegas way higher than they are ranked. I dislike NYC but I'd rank it higher than Bakersfield Scranton better than LA? You have to wonder if these people have ever been to these places.

There's a lot of weird placements here.

I like Denver, Austin, Raleigh-Durham, Seattle, and Boston as a nice compilation from each corner of the country as the top 5.

That is true, but according to the US Census, it is the 14th biggest metro and all of the counties are in the state of MI. So, it is legit. There is a source that shows that if Windsor Ontario was included in the area, it goes up to 5.7 million people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit%E2%80%93Windsor

Another thing that might play a part in Albany being ranked the highest NYS area is that it has the highest median household income for any Upstate NY metropolitan area at $61,841. That is a little over $8000 over the national median household income figure of $53,482(2010-2014 information).

That $8,000 will quickly be eaten up by the cost of housing and utilities vs other Upstate metros.

Rochester
Buffalo
Syracuse
Albany

That's how I gotta rank em. Never thought I would have put Buffalo 2nd until I visited last summer.

Good point, as the Albany area does have the highest median home price out of the Upstate NY areas($196,800, 10-14 info). That puts it in between Harrisonburg VA and Austin TX in that regard. Austin's metro median household income is essentially the same as Albany's at $61,900. Harrisonburg's is $48,518 and could be due to the presence of James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University.
