for example, I hear white plains is relatively expensive right? correct me if i'm wrong but is white plains considered to be in NYC? I know it's relatively close....but i'm not sure. So what i'm asking is, neighborhoods like that...other then white plains, which other suburbs are known to be more expensive?
White Plains is in the NYC metro and is located in Westchester County.

If you are looking for something similar in Upstate NY, Ithaca may be the best example due to seeing growth and it is a very diverse small city, with a nice Downtown. It isn't a suburb and may feel(key word) isolated, but is maybe an hour from Syracuse.

You also have the previously mentioned Saratoga Springs in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy metro, that offers a similar vibe/feel.

In Upstate NY, you will have more villages or stand alone small cities that may have things on a small scale. For instance, Auburn, about 30-40 minutes west of Syracuse has a Downtown that has been coming along or the village of Skaneateles about 15 miles SW of Syracuse, are a couple of examples.

So, are you essentially look for an urban suburb with its own "scene" outside of a bigger city center?

I like the city vibe and I'm preferring something with a city like feel to it BUT i don't want it to be too hectic and crazy like it is in Manhattan. I've lived in downtown Los Angeles in the city center and it's often times more headaches then it is enjoyable.

I like having the city feel more so for the amenities like choices of restaurants, bars, walk ability, etc. but I also like It to quiet down when it's time to go to sleep. So basically, an area that is relatively busy/trendy. Has options for a decent/nice apartment that is either walking distance or a short drive into the "city" so I can go do things.

You can do that within Syracuse and the other bigger Upstate NY cities. For instance, if you like thise Baldwinsville apartments, you can still drive into Syracuse for all of those things. You could do something within city limits as well, in terms of being close to nightlife, but living somewhere that is quiet.

Syracuse has areas in its Downtown like Armory Square, Hanover Square and to a degree, Westcott Street. So, even the cities outside of NYC has what you are looking for to some degree.

None of them really, with perhaps some relatively "bad" traffic during Rush Hour. Nothing compared to L.A. though.....Not even close.

Just curious, but do you know where in the Syracuse area this position is located in?

so the position is based out of a home office located in or around syracuse. (I think they'll be relatively flexible as to where I want to live).

The territory i'd be covering from what I know would be most of the new york state but i believe that most of my of my accounts will closer to albany, rochester, syracuse, etc. (I could be wrong).

I'll be driving alot for work so i'd ideally need a place relatively close or easy to get to the highway to get around. I don't have an office I go to, my car/home would be my office....every day i'd go to my accounts, etc.

If your territory is essentially the I-90 corridor, I would stick with Syracuse due to its proximity to those cities and location. Rochester is about an hour and 15 minutes or so and Albany is about 2 hours and 15 minutes away. You could go with Utica, but it is a smaller city than Syracuse and I don't know if that would be an issue. Rochester is the biggest city and metro. Syracuse is the second biggest city, the Albany metro is the second biggest in that regard. Albany is third in terms of city size, with the Syracuse metro coming in third.

good to know. i'm going to begin my search for an apartment soon after I figure out where majority of my accounts are. I heard that Utica has a high crime rate? is that true?
